Most people who visit the Capitol never get to see what I’m about to show you. 👀🏛️ When the Capitol was built, Congress initially intended for George and Martha Washington to be buried in the center of the building. However, they never consulted George Washington about this plan, and he wanted to be buried at Mount Vernon. After the crypt was completed in 1826, the Washington family chose to honor George & Martha’s wishes, leaving them buried at Mt. Vernon. Come with me to see where the Washingtons were supposed to be buried in the Capitol building. This area isn’t open to the public, but in honor of America’s 250th birthday, I wanted to give you a behind-the- scenes tour of some of the most special places in our seat of government.

The myth of George Washington is more important than the “history.” Why? Because myths are the container of a culture’s ideal values. Our founding hero could have been like the Romans— a man who murdered his own brother. But our ideal hero is a giant who “never told a lie” and kneeled to pray at Valley Forge. That our culture selected those values to revere and preserve in myth isn’t “propaganda” about our past. It is the archetype we aim toward. Mythological hero George Washington is a story we should keep telling.
