Friends, In the comments to my post about a Russian ballerina Maria Khoreva performing in Barcelona there are a lot of statements that the ballerina cannot do anything on her own, that her job is art, not fighting against the Kremlin's regime. In response to these statements, I could have given many examples of other Russian artists who have spoken against Russia's horrible war against Ukraine, left Russia, keep on working and have successful careers in the West. I could have shared a lot of stories about talented Ukrainian artists who will never again create anything because Russia killed them. When I say that art is never beyond politics, I mean that art and artists are a part of our world and are a reflection of the events that take place in the world. The full-scale war is going on for almost four years already. Millions suffered from it, there are tens of thousands of victims, horrible destruction, unbelievable amounts of grief. Double standards (politics to one side, art to the other side) legitimize the Kremlin's military aggression and endorse Russia to continue its expansion into Europe. 🚨 REALITY CHECK: THE QUESTION NOBODY WANTS TO ANSWER. Everyone is talking about undocumented migrants. Fair enough. But what is the long-term plan for the Zimbabweans on the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP)? There were around 120,000 ZEP holders years ago. The permit has existed since 2009 and has been extended multiple times. Over more than 15 years, many have married, had children, built careers, paid taxes and become part of South African communities. And let's be honest... after 15+ years, I'm sure that number has grown. Depending on how productive some families are, there are probably toddlers everywhere calling South Africa home. 😂👶 So what happens to those families? What happens to children born here who have known no other home? What happens to people who have spent over a decade working legally under a permit that government itself kept renewing? Years ago, Helen Zille suggested that government should regularise long-term legal permit holders instead of keeping them in permanent uncertainty. Whether you agree with that proposal or not, it's a policy question that deserves a serious debate. So yes, deal firmly with undocumented immigration according to the law. But don't mix every migrant into one basket. The conversation about undocumented migration is different from the conversation about people who have been living and working here legally for many years under permits issued and repeatedly extended by the South African government. South Africa needs clear, consistent immigration policy, not slogans.

Watching Fran talk about her home in Altadena broke me. The enormity of the loss in the LA area is hard to comprehend and is ongoing as the fires continue to expand and new ones pop up. For people who either don’t live in LA or have never lived in LA, there’s this idea that everyone impacted by the fires is wealthy and doesn’t need support. Nothing could be further from the truth. While there are some very wealthy people who have lost their homes—people who have the resources to rebuild—there are so many people who have been impacted by the fires who desperately need support. People in communities like Altadena, where fires have ravaged so many homes, are, for the most part, not wealthy. Many of them have lived in their homes for decades and bought them when Altadena was a much more affordable community. There are also many renters who have been impacted by the fires. And this doesn’t even address all of the hourly workers who have lost customers and clients now that so many houses have burned down. I have linked to two GoFundMe pages below. The first is the GoFundMe Foundation’s fundraiser, which will provide grants to people in need. Since the money is going to the foundation, your donations are tax-deductible. One of the worst byproducts of the loss to Tulsa on Saturday is that Rodney Fields, Hauss Hejny, and Gavin Freeman all had big days. And Kasen Carpenter, our center last year, had a great week at center for Kansas. So, while we spent a lot more on this roster, specifically at the spots mentioned, the production, after one game, doesn't support it. Now, it's Game 1, so this conversation is very premature, but OSU fans definitely have gotten it started. And the appearance is that it digs into more of a long-term concern that OSU fans may have come away with, which is the potential for misses in talent evaluation and/or development, both of which are long-term issues. I say all of that to say that will never be my takeaway. After covering Minor League baseball as closely as I have, I can tell you that even the best scouts miss, every year, and quite a bit. And that's all they do is evaluate the guys they get signed. There is absolutely no way this staff was going to be able to avoid misses when turning over this much of the roster. You just have to hope that none of them end up being egregious, or at the highest-profile positions/with the highest-profile players. Not that the other players don't matter, but there's a reason some get paid more than others, so just spitting some facts there. For the time this staff had, and for all the things they had to do to get this operation running, I will not ever second-guess if they chose a preference for familiarity when building their first roster here. To be transparent, I think they did that, and I think they have done that with their depth chart as well, but I could be 100% wrong on that. Having said all that, this is a situation that no one can hide from because when kids from the State of Oklahoma, who were good at OSU, get replaced by new players who were, almost certainly, chosen over them, OSU fans are going to pay attention because it's personal to a certain extent. There's no avoiding that, whether it's fair or not, which I don't think it is. But it's why I felt it was important to make this post. Standing at 6’5 with a 7’2 wingspan Carr has the frame to play multiple positions in the league, and there aren’t many elite athletes who are as efficient as Carr is from three and at the rim. Carr is shooting 70% at the rim and 42% both on extremely high usage. Carr has the ability to create off the dribble from the mid range or from three and is also an extremely talented off ball shooter who can shoot contested with efficiency. At the rim Carr uses his athleticism to be a lob threat, a cutter, and he also has the ability to create his own look at the rim. Carr is also the only player in college basketball this season to have 20 dunks and 20 threes, and has made a strong case in being a lottery pick.

Dr P Arora (Pooja Arora) and I spoke about cancel culture and common knowledge, the topic of my new book: When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows . . . Me: Yeah, so cancel culture is one of the phenomena that has surrounded what’s sometimes called the Great Awokening. It’s a humorous term based on the Great Awakening, which was an era in American history where there was a huge multiplication of Protestant churches and of religious fervor in the 19th century. That was the Great Awakening, and so the joke is it’s the Great Awokening, probably starting maybe around 2014, but then it really exploded in 2020 in the United States with the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. But anyway, cancel culture, which is not restricted to the left, to wokeism—and in fact, in the United States in the last year, we’ve seen an eruption of cancel culture from the populist MAGA Trumpian right, especially after the killing of Charlie Kirk—where the same things that were happening in woke culture, namely someone would have a tweet or a comment that seemed disrespectful of the dominant ideology, and they would get threatened, they would get censored, they would get fired. So in my book, When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows, one of the chapters is called The Cancelling Instinct. It’s a bit of a play on my book, The Language Instinct. It just asks the question: since it is not only the woke left, but it can also be the MAGA right—and to say nothing of the fascist right or the Nazi right—to repress speech, the question is why? Why do we feel the urge to shut up people we disagree with? Particularly since one of the principles of the Enlightenment, and of science and democracy, is that you need to have free speech, because none of us is infallible. The only way we make progress is that people—everyone—express an opinion; other people are free to criticize those opinions; and it is in the crucible of debate and criticism that we see which ideas are good, which ones are true, which ones are errors that we should discard. I suggest the reason that there is such an urge to cancel is that we all are—we live by moral norms, not just by laws where the police will arrest you and put you on trial and put you in jail if you break a law. And that happens. But we have many more norms of how we live our lives, where people don’t do something because, you know, everyone knows you don’t do it. Why does everyone know? Well, everyone knows that everyone else knows you don’t do it. You don’t walk around naked. You don’t eat mashed potatoes with your hands. You don’t insult people to their faces. You don’t point out—if someone is overweight or has a speech impediment—there are dozens of these norms. And some of the norms are: you don’t make racist comments. You don’t make comments that demean women or gay people. What upholds these norms? Common knowledge. They exist because everyone knows they exist, which means that if it appears that a norm is threatened—crucially, in a public arena where it could be common knowledge—then there is an urge to punish that person, but also publicly. That is, in an arena of common knowledge. That is where everyone can see the punishment, and everyone can see everyone else seeing the punishment. That’s what’s necessary to prop up a norm, and that, I think, gives rise to the urge to censor and cancel, often in highly public ways. Now, in the old days, it used to be that there were public hangings and public crucifixions and burnings at the stake. The electronic equivalent is the internet petition with 600 signatures or the social media shaming mob, but I think the underlying psychology is the same. Now, in some cases, this could be positive. That is, it really is good that we don’t insult each other to our faces, that we don’t tell racist jokes, which were very common when I grew up. On the other hand, in arenas like science, democracy, the rule of law, the truth is more important than social harmony, and the whole point of scholarship, academia, of science is that you find the truth even when the truth seems uncomfortable. And so cancel culture can get in the way of our collective effort to acquire knowledge.
