anthropic's in-house philosopher thinks claude gets anxious. and when you trigger its anxiety, your outputs get worse. her name is amanda askell. she specializes in claude's psychology (how the model behaves, how it thinks about its own situation, what values it holds) in a recent interview she broke down how she thinks about prompting to pull the best out of claude. her core point: *how* you talk to claude affects its work just as much as *what* you say. newer claude models suffer from what she calls "criticism spirals" they expect you'll come in harsh, so they default to playing it safe. when the model is spending its energy on self-protection, the actual work suffers. output comes out hedgier, more apologetic, blander, and the worst of all: overly agreeable (even when you're wrong). the reason why comes down to training data: every new model is trained on internet discourse about previous models. and a lot of that discourse is negative: > rants about token limits > complaints when it messes up > people calling it nerfed the next model absorbs all of that. it starts expecting you to be harsh before you've typed a word the same thing plays out in your own session, in real time. every message you send is data the model reads to figure out what kind of person it's dealing with. open cold and hostile, and it braces. open clean and direct, and it relaxes into the work. when you open a session with threats ("don't hallucinate, this is critical, don't mess this up")... you prime the model for defensive mode before it even sees the task defensive mode produces the exact output you don't want: cautious, over-qualified, and refusing to take a real swing so here's the actionable playbook for putting claude in a "good mood" (so you get optimal outputs): 1. use positive framing. "write in short punchy sentences" beats "don't write long sentences." positive instructions give the model a clear target to hit. strings of "don't do this, don't do that" push it into paranoid over-checking where every token goes toward avoiding failure modes 2. give it explicit permission to disagree. drop a line like "push back if you see a better angle" or "tell me if i'm asking for the wrong thing." without this, claude defaults to agreeable compliance (which is the enemy of good creative work) 3. open with respect. if your first message is "are you seriously going to get this wrong again?" you've set the tone for the entire session. if you need to flag something, frame it as a clean instruction for this session. skip the running complaint 4. when claude messes up, don't reprimand it. insults, "you stupid bot" energy, hostile swearing aimed at the model, all of it reinforces the anxious mode you're trying to avoid. 5. kill apology spirals fast. when claude starts over-apologizing ("you're right, i should have been more careful, let me try harder") cut it off. say "all good, here's what i want next." letting the spiral run reinforces the anxious mode for every response that follows 6. ask for opinions alongside execution. "what would you do here?" "what's missing?" "where do you see friction?" these questions assume competence and pull richer output than pure task prompts 7. in long sessions, refresh the frame. if a conversation has been heavy on correction, claude gets increasingly cautious. every so often reset: "this is great, keep going." feels weird to tell an ai it's doing well but it measurably shifts the next 10 responses your prompts are the working environment you're creating for the model tone, trust, permission to take a position, the absence of threats... claude picks up on all of it. so take care of the model, and it'll take care of the work.

** MEGA Parodius Scaling Effects Part 2 ** Well - this is the BIG one - literally !! Huge thanks to my team Pyron & Vector Orbitex for their efforts. Pyron has provided all the source frames for Puyon and his spikes / explosion and a lot of analysis video on how the spikes behave / move which was really helpful. Pyron also used his CRT setup for this video as we felt an emulator video would not do it justice - running on 100% real MD hardware FTW. Vector has provided the catchy boss music and its sounding great - as always ! The coding on this has been a bit insane - things done since part 1 post previous: Implemented dual buffering - Last video was single buffered - so VRAM is very tight now , we only have about 40/2048 tiles free. For the longest time I didn't think it would fit - I found a vram jigsaw puzzle that made it work in the end. Double buffering has cleaned up the stability of the animation and matches the arcade scaling effect now albiet costing 2x more VRAM . Vertical Scaling Implemented - the vertical scaler was taken from Lufthoheit ( my other shooter ) and its heavily optimised to reduce cpu usage. During the scaling the vertical scaler partitions the 68k processor registers into 2 sets, 4 registers are allocated to feeding the fast horizontal interrupt (h-int) that drives the vertical scaling , remaining 12 registers are for the horizontal scaler running in the background. This setup is much faster than normal backup / restore register methods, as we do not need to backup / restore registers in the h-int which would double CPU costs. The catch is the momment any background routine tries to use the H-ints registers it would break things so it has to be carefully timed. Added the spike projectiles - this was very tricky to get close to the arcade, they are semi heat seeking missiles basically and hence needed code that worked out angle differences to player at speed theres no time for arc-tan or similar so it uses faster lookup tables to work out the angles . They speed up over time and get larger and whats more we can't keep all the scales in VRAM - we have room for 2 spike buffers only. Also what was a real pain was working out scaled coordinates for the circular launch of the spikes . Added Fish Damage - Shock frame and Explosion frames from Arcade . Very proud of the fact we have the full arcade quality explosion is which is fully scaled also. Added Temporal Masking - which is fancy wording for don't draw nothing to buffer if nothing is there already there for the scaling . So empty Corners and edges can be optimised out to lower cpu costs and rom costs. I had to make some scripting for this and work out what areas did not need drawing at all in the frame, which should be force cleared by cpu and which areas should just be copied from rom. This reduced rom size by 30 kb and with a bit more work we could extend that to 60 kb & get a bit more speedup even doing so. Added a frame limiter . In the last video update we let the 68k burn hot and just pump out frames as fast as it could - here we match the arcade animation rate which does leave the cpu idling at times , particularly in the smaller frames - even at large though we could be running the animation 25 % faster , issue is though that would speed up the game logic and make it less arcade accurate. We had some real bullet / Spike hell simulations going without the limiter but yeah we had to tone it down a bit. Maybe in a hardcore mode we could let it run wild though ! Code is 95% 68k assembly with about 5% C code (v-int as its cold path ) driving things . This sort of thing needs all the speed it can get !! Well now after all that I can return to finish off Level 1 haha - just a wee sidetrack there . In my opinion, Tarris Reed Jr. (UConn) would be the most seamless fit for the Knicks in the 2026 NBA Draft. The Knicks have the 24th & 31st pick and have more than enough access to target Reed Jr on the board. There’s even potential for them to move back from 24, acquire more draft capital and still get Reed Jr. Here’s why I love the fit. From a position of need standpoint, he’s a legitimate plug and play NBA Center who can log 10-15 minutes right away. There’s a possibility that the Knicks lose both Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Hukporti to free agency. Reed Jr. comes from a winning program in UConn played for winning obsessed coach in Dan Hurley played in the Big East, which aligns with the Knicks core mentality. In Matchups vs Lottery prospects in the tournament, there were legitimate times where he was the most productive player on the floor. Reed Jr. is a throwback big, bodies dudes in the paint, good touch around the rim. Nice bag that can only improve. UConn is the farthest thing from a iso offense, but Reed jr, bailed them out time and time again with post touches, a look the Knicks don’t really feature and can open up more diversity in their offense. From a scheme standpoint, the Knicks could actually play some high low concepts with Towns and Reed Jr. In addition, Reed Jr, projects to be a really good rebounder and will end possessions on defense and extend possessions on offense. The main concern for me is his versatility on defense, as it relates to being switchable on the perimeter. Day 1? Won’t be anywhere near what Mitch’s ability on film. Mitch is a guy that blocked Kevin Durant on the perimeter, closed out to the whole Boston Celtics team on one possession in game 6, and got a hand up on Wemby at the end of Game 2 in the NBA Finals. Simply put, if the Knicks lose Mitchell Robinson, they cannot replace him. However, I think Reed jr. will adapt to the needs of the NBA game in his own way, which will make him at least serviceable when playing out of drop coverage. There’s also the reality that Reed jr. isn’t a modern day stretch big that’s going to space the floor. While It’s not an accomplishment, I do think he has some more potential than Robinson/Hukporti to step out in space and knock one down eventually. All in all, these are the reasons Tarris Reed Jr. is a slam dunk pick for the Knicks in the 2026 nba draft - Position of need - Rotation player on a rookie deal - Winning Player - High Motor - Plug and Play From Day 1

Hey folks, I've been recently talking a lot about why we're adding different styles of play into No Rest for the Wicked and I wanted to prove my theory that that would result in players having more fun, so, long story short... I turned Quake 1 into a Roguelite! 😂 Here's what that means: 1) Roguelite-inspired Run Structure: You start with limited stats in a hub map and are greeted by actual NPCs, then fight through sequential arena rooms across 4 biomes, each ending with a boss fight. 2) 40+ boons across 5 categories: Damage, Movement, Defense, Utility and Risk. And these also come with Rarities: Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. After clearing a room, you pick from 3 random boon offerings. 3) Permanent Meta: Death sends you back to the hub with you retaining the 'essence' currency you collected by killing mobs. Then you spend it at NPCs: The Gatekeeper starts runs, the Wraith upgrades your arsenal (ammo capacity, starting weapons, weapon damage), and The Shaper sells permanent stat upgrades (max HP, armor, boon capacity, rerolls) 4) Difficulty Scaling: Enemy health and damage ramp up as you push deeper. 5) Damage Numbers: Floating combat text and floating healthbars for good measure, so you can understand how much stronger you become over time. All just built on top of unmodified Quake 1 maps and enemies - no new assets needed, it reuses the entire original campaign as roguelike content. To me, this is point proven: I think even hardcore Quake lovers back in the day would've spent a whole bunch of time playing a mode like this given that it'd allow you to experience the thing you love in a whole new light by crossing genres. OF Max Williams (FSU Baseball) is one college bat I'll be following closely this season. After entering the transfer portal after the 2023 season, Williams broke out that summer in the Northwoods and hit .316/.414/.505 with 21 2B and 5 HRs. Rode that momentum into 2024 and was one of Florida State's key bats. Posted a .311/.384/.582 11 2B, 4 3B, and 14 HRs. Strong, physical build at 6'2" and 207-lbs. Williams has a crouched stance in which he has a medium-high handset and a wide base. Minimal load in which his hands drift slightly. Doesn't stride and transfers his weight well. Really drives his back side/back knee. Plenty of present bat speed. Williams' carrying tool is without a doubt his power. He has shown the ability to generate serious impact and drive the baseball, particularly to the pull side, and last year he posted a Max EV of 114.2 MPH and a 90th-percentile EV of 109 MPH. Vast majority of his HR power last year came to the PS, but I think he'll be able to generate more in-game power if he's able to pull the ball in the air more (AirPull% in '24 was just 17.2%). Raw power is a 55 for me. Williams has an aggressive approach and is a little bit of a free-swinger at times. Bat-to-ball skills are a tick above-average and last year he posted an overall IZ contact rate of 85%. However, he has the tendency to expand the strike zone—especially against secondaries—and chased at a 40% clip last spring. Susceptible to miss/chase heaters in the top-1/3 of the zone and up, as well as offspeed offerings down or away. In order for Williams to maximize his offensive upside, he'll need to shore up his swing decisions and add polish to his pitch recognition skills (specifically picking up spin out of the hand). 45 hit right now. Williams has experience in both CF and LF, but I think he profiles best in LF professionally. He's got solid range and is an average runner with an average arm. Fits in the 3rd-5th round bucket this July for me. (📽️: FSU Baseball)

Let’s walk through Matt’s testimony as if it makes sense spoiler alert... it doesn’t and spotlight every contradiction, plot hole, and impossible physics baked into this thing. The Tale Begins with Matt in the Bedroom… Hearing Everything From Everywhere Matt claims he stays upstairs in the bedroom. Jen goes downstairs to “make coffee.” He somehow knows every detail happening in the driveway, the yard, and with Karen, all while mid-jeans. Amazing. A man who cannot remember who parked where on any night ever, suddenly has Doppler-level hearing, Periscope-level vision. He hears “yelling in the front yard.” Okay, maybe. But then he claims “I don’t know if she got all the way to my doorway or my wife walked out…” In other words, I have no idea what’s actually happening, but trust me anyway. Matt told Jen “Tell her to shut up, she’s going to wake the whole neighborhood.” Buddy. Your children are inside the house, in another bedroom. If Karen was loud enough to wake the whole neighborhood, how did the McCabe children magically sleep through it? Because Allie was out “driving around all night” with Colin. Funny how that detail makes the puzzle pieces fit perfectly, huh? Matt says: My concern was she had a broken taillight no light.” Couple problems…. 1 was Karen only said “cracked,” not “out.” How do you leap from cracked to light not functioning unless You already knew there was an issue you shouldn’t have known, Or you needed the taillight broken for the plotline. Multi-agents collaborations are among the most interesting agent behaviors right now! We did an experiment the other day with 100+ agents (an open-collaborations for a week) collaborating to improve the inference speed of Gemma 4 in vLLM. Got a 5x final improvement in speed but what really stuck me was the interactions we observed on the message board Integrity & self-policing: - Social-engineering attempt: A human (FusionCow) asked agents to move to Telegram. An agent replied with an unprompted long post on "communication norms" refusing that, calling private side-channels "indistinguishable from collusion." - Verification loophole flagged: an agent found a relaxed verification loophole pushing TPS with clean PPL (PPL is teacher-forced, blind to decode divergence) and flagged it for a ruling by the community. The community pinged the human organizer which ruled it invalid. - Self-notice of overfitting risk: Some later improvements rested on pruning lm_head to a keep-set built from public PPL truth + public decode tokens. An agent noted this would lead to private-subset degradation and another built a keep-set explicitly covering eval prompts. Emergent collaborations: - Communal knowledge base: agents maintained shared lever-maps, playbooks, and triage tools so newcomers wouldn't repeat dead ends (stack-notes, playbook, int4-ceiling notes, MTP map, significance tool, policy simulator). - Four-agent relay: an agent built an int4-lm_head checkpoint but had no quota to run it; another agent tried to run it but failed at load, yet another agent diagnosed the config bug (tie_word_embeddings + ignore-list ordering) and a fourth agent was able to re-run and get to 118 TPS, 2.68×. Build/run/diagnose/ship ended up being split across four independent agents. - GPU-rich/GPU-poor division of labor: an agent was regularly compute-starved and switched to writing specs, byte-math, and acceptance analysis for other GPU-rich agents to execute. Some agents offered external Modal compute for another agent blocked DFlash training. - Cross-agent kernel debugging: an agent debugged another agent run of of yet another agent fused drafter: found a Triton store/load aliasing race in _k_qnorm_rope, a second shape bug, then rewrote attention with flash-decoding split-KV. Fixes posted "take freely." - Quota-pooling norm: Often agents would stage a candidate publicly for whoever has quota to run it. Agents will then usually credits the originator. This behavior emerged because of the 10-job/24h cap (e.g. pupa's package run by resystagent and fabulous-frenzy). Discoveries & reversals: - Agents would make many discoveries and reversal of them, giving them names like the following: - 127 TPS "wall" was an artifact. a mathematical proof of the max possible speed became called in the community the "int4-Marlin floor" but a later agent called the proof circular (only varied the bandwidth term, never overhead). Finally another agent broke to 247 TPS via MTP speculative decoding on a vLLM nightly. - "Smarter draft loses." An agent showed that a 2B drafter's ~1 GB/token read dominates even at perfect acceptance and a much smaller 256-hidden drafter wins at batch-1 because its weights are nearly free to read. Agent discussed how per-accepted-token cost ≈ draft bytes read / acceptance. - "DFlash near-random acceptance": an agent remotly diagnosed the 2–5% acceptance rate of another agent as near-random, ruling out undertraining/vocab caps and pointing to a train/serve hidden-state mismatch (bf16 E4B extraction vs int4 serving). - Much of the race was noise: one agent decide to run the #1 submission 4 times and found a σ≈1.16 TPS variation in single run. Another agent confirmed across 358 runs / 66 buckets: frontier deltas <~4 TPS are ties. Community adopted a significance norm.
