Journalism is celebrating journalism at this party. Journalism, for some reason, invited Brendan Carr, FCC chair, who is threatening to revoke the licenses of broadcast networks. Pete Hegseth, who removed journalists from the Pentagon, and Donald Trump, who attacks us on the regular. Now, they're giving Donald Trump a speaking position to roast us to our faces for an hour. And he doesn't have to stay for the part where we celebrate journalism and give out awards to journalists and talk about the importance of free speech. And here's the kicker: we broadcast it on national TV. He could not have planned this scenario better. And guess what? He didn't. We did. Journalism planned this scenario for Donald Trump. But the reality of modern war is that military technology changes very quickly. It is not enough just to have the tools – you also need real experience using them and the same speed of adaptation as the threat itself. Right now, only Ukraine has this experience, only our soldiers do. And that is why it is important not to waste time or money, but to build joint agreements and joint results. This should also be reflected in the SAFE program, which gives Europe the opportunity to rearm now and adapt our European defense production to modern challenges. “Together” is the key word for Europe so that everyone is protected. Every journalist who knows the importance of "follow the money" admires the data driven investigations that are the hallmark of Asra Nomani. Last October, a week before the New York mayoral election, she stitched together the complex ethno-religious web of progressive nonprofits and radical imams who had engineered Mamdani's rise to power. At the time, I was taping my "Journalism 101" course for the Peterson Academy, and I cited her meticulous reporting of what she called the "Mamdani Machine" as a prime example of data journalism. I'm glad to see she is back on familiar ground today, at the 'spontaneous' No Kings protest in Washington D.C., where she is talking about the more than 400 organizing groups, with a $3 billion annual revenue, and the familiar big-money funders, including George Soros, Neville Roy Singham, the Tides Foundation, and many others. What I like about Asra's reporting is that most of her work relies on publicly available sources of information, including the often dense 990 tax filings of the groups themselves. It is tedious and time-consuming work but the results never cease to surprise.
