I feel like he has a big season ahead. He has a chip on his shoulder after 2 years of not having a manager who actually rates him. Carrick clearly does now and this is the time for him to really show what he can do. Biggest season of his life so far incoming.

Agreed. Any of the following 3 would address a lack of depth in their respective midfield role - Lazar Samardzic (Atalanta) Samu Costa (Mallorca) and Lewis Ferguson (Bologna). All would be very singable and relatively cheap.

It was frustrating. The team was screaming for control in midfield at times & to ignore someone like Mainoo who can offer that, is baffling. But I wonder if this is in part of the Manager preference over athleticism type rather than mavericks. (Which reflected his squad)

Not just Mainoo; Foden is frigging world class too and I’m a United fan. Against Brentford in April, City were 1-1. Foden changed the game with his technical ability and game changing qualities. Tuchel seems to hate technically gifted players and seems to value athleticism!

He makes a great point because from me, I wasnt really going crazy about specifically Kobbie not playing in earlier games. What worried me was the fact that when England struggled, he didnt see the need to try something different. His substitutions were mostly to bring on players to continue playing the same way. So yes, England had already dropped deep before his first substitution, but his changes were to continue defending deep not to try and change that to get some control. Mainoo, 1 or 2 fast attacking players and some sensible tactical tweaks were options that could have helped do that.

Issue is mainoo needs someone to start next to him. Still your point stands - Mainoo and rice would have had a better balance

I agree with this to an extent but as much as Mainoo is a good player who I rate, he didn’t deserve to be in the squad ahead of Adam Wharton the only reason he made the squad is because he plays for United.
