LB Search & Destroy Drill - The search and destroy drill is highly effective for linebackers when actions inside the box are cloudy or unclear. - Coaches can choose to have players either shuffle or use a crossover step to move from their starting point to the cone. - A primary emphasis of the drill is to ensure the linebacker keeps their shoulders, hips, and feet square once they reach the cone. - Linebackers must avoid crossing over their feet when making contact with the ball carrier. - The drill should be executed at a thud tempo during the teaching phase so both the linebacker and the ball carrier can feel the movement, with the ball carrier waiting to make a decision until the linebacker reaches the cone. - The drill is excellent for young linebackers to learn how to match the path of the running back and track where he is going, rather than just running blindly through gaps.
