DeeKay + People = DeePle For his new work titled ‘DeePle The People’, South Korean artist DeeKay turns his eye to Hong Kong, rendering the Asian metropolis in his signature style. Characterized by nostalgic video game aesthetics and joyful tenderness, the 24-second animation is a buzzing celebration of the city. He renders Hong Kong as both a specific place, and a universal locale on the world’s cultural stage. The LACMA has long been a great supporter of initiatives in art and technology. From the original Art and Technology Lab, to more recent exhibitions like Coded: Art Enters the Computer Age, 1952–1982, their sustained interest in the development of creative and artistic practices in relation to the rise of computer technology has helped sustain a once controversial yet undeniably fascinating genre of art before it came into public discourse. I am so pleased with the opportunity to highlight an important part of my practice, known as parameterization. By changing one variable in the program, in this case the percentage of pegs to be wrapped by a string, we are able to see how the original artwork, Ringers #962, evolves over the course of 9 frames arranged in a grid. This process is what I call a “parameter sweep” and it’s an honor to present the combined works as the LACMA Iterations. As the artist who coded the algorithm, I had no explicit control over how the artwork would develop, instead relying on randomization and a deep familiarity of the aesthetic form to help guide the output through code.

I’m excited to introduce Artist Commons, a year-long, online development program for early- and mid-career artists. Applications open next week, and the program starts in mid-January. ➤ Do you want to learn more about how to navigate the business of art? ➤ Do you want an artist community invested in your longterm growth? ➤ Do you want real feedback on your work instead of just some kind words from your friends? If you’ve been looking for a way to level up your art practice without spending an arm and a leg to get an MFA, Artist Commons is for you. Artists accepted into the program are paired with a mentor and a small cohort of peers at their level for weekly feedback sessions. Then tune in every month to lectures on the business of art, craft workshops from visiting artists, talks on various modern and contemporary art movements, and guest speakers working across the art world. You’ll build deep community with your fellow members through online meetups including regular reading groups, close looking exercises, and forum discussions, as well as quarterly IRL meetups in select cities. Developing this has been so inspiring and I’m so excited to build the community I wish I’d had when I was coming up. I can’t wait to tell you about all the amazing guests we have lined up. After months of working on this project, the long days, the unexpected hiccups, the constant race against time, seeing “Skyward” come to life last night was honestly one of those moments that just stay with you. It’s a monumental piece by Ezequiel Pini (Six N. Five) , commissioned by the public government of Abu Dhabi for Manar Art Public Art Abu Dhabi , but once you see it out there in the desert… it becomes something else entirely. Honestly can’t stop admiring how, as an artist, he pushes the boundaries of what’s possible every single time. It looks like a kind of magical portal, standing quietly in the middle of the sand. There’s this beautiful contrast between the physical world, the earth, the stone, all these elements that carry thousands of years of history and the digital side of the piece, with its delicate, floating constellations. Somehow the two speak to each other, and you feel caught right in the middle of that conversation. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop for a second, breathe a little deeper, and let your mind wander. Watching people walk toward the installation, fall silent, get lost in their own thoughts, it was incredibly moving. You could almost watch them start to dream. It’s moments like this that remind me why I’ll never stop believing in the power of digital art and supporting this entire movement.
