Getting older is realizing that Squidward is a better friend then Patrick

Squidward was just misunderstood, way more loyal than people gave him credit for

That pizza episode has lived rent free in my head for 20 years.

Patrick may be that one friend that you will mostly enjoy hanging out with and make your days fun on a daily basis. But Squidward is that one friend who, even though you don't have the same interests, they're the realist that steps up to you or be there at your lowest.

Thats the beauty of his character. As much as he seems to hate SpongeBob its been proven he genuinely cares about the little guy and can't live without him.

There are times when Squidward was happy to get rid of SpongeBob. But he does seem more understanding than Patrick who’s hypocritically, selfish, and can be mean sometimes despite his lack of intelligence. Yet SpongeBob is too kind and still sees him as his best friend.

@Nerderaid It’s so odd how as a kid I used to HATE squidward but by the time I turned 13 I started to see his way more and more and eventually I came to love the character.

Squidward was a real one for telling Mr. Krabs off and helping SpongeBob deliver this pizza. It's like ungrateful to see how many people are mean to SpongeBob.

He WAS, until the writing took a nose dive after the first movie i.e. Season 4 onwards, and everyone became caricatures of themselves. All the clips here are within the original 3 season run.

Nah, while Squidward has his moments, he is still mostly a callous jerk to SpongeBob. Even in the Dark Age he was still worse than Patrick, and with Patrick back to his old kinder self in recent seasons Squidward is still a big jerk.

For all his problems Squidward Tentacles is basically a good person. Arguably the most standup character in the series.

He may be annoyed with Spongebob to the end of the world, but dammit he will help him if the situation needs it. He has a heart, after all (And his paycheck and job as a cashier kinda depend on him)

What I never stopped to think about is as much as SpongeBob grates on Squidward, he remembers his humanity because of him. He learns to be kinder to people who deserve kindness back. Not ALL the time, but the fact that SpongeBob succeeds this at all is a bragadocious feat.

Okay Patrick can be a bad friend, but this is still a reach on Squidward too. The best example here was him throwing the pizza at homeboys face for making Spongebob cry. Everything else either involved Squidward hurting him in the first place, or thinking Spongebob would die.

Remember that time he abused of his hospitality and forced him to act as his servant and even wear a maid oufit as his uniform?

Patrick was a great friend in the earlier seasons. They just ruined him by making less of a big dumb But lovable oath, and instead a hypocritical smart-ass who likes to pretend to be dumb because it's more convenient

Idk man Patrick traded being a genius and got his ass kicked by a gorilla because he cared for SpongeBob’s wellbeing, also being his right hand during the whole shell city/plan z situation lol. They’re both his true bros

I'm not sure. I feel like Patrick represents a childhood friend and Squidward an adult friend. Kinda accurate for a manchild like SpongeBob. Patrick is naive, immature & kinda selfish but loves Sponge unconditionally. Squidward is bitter and grumpy, but more grounded and mature.

As a kid, Patrick feels like the fun friend. As an adult, Squidward starts looking like the one who actually understands boundaries and reality.

Better friend? No. Better person, yes. Bear in mind Squidward would rarely want to hang out with Spongebob, and does find him annoying. He also believes Spongebob worthy of dignity and respect, especially with how hard he tries. Then there is Patrick.

I mean, Squidward still treats Spongebob horribly He just hates it when other people treat him even worse
