Devin Williams was asked about the job Carlos Mendoza is doing and says the Mets' struggles are on the players: "It's absolutely on us. He doesn't swing a bat and he doesn't throw a baseball. We've been in a lot of these games. It's been close. Him or somebody else is not affecting that. If we're not getting the job done, somebody else isn't going to just magically flip a switch and we're going to get it done. He's putting guys in good positions. We're not performing."

Behind the ball is how you get depth AND length out front. (Not one or the other) Here’s what it actually gives you: 1. You swing more connected and deeper. 2. The barrel enters earlier and stays in longer. You get both. 3. Depth behind what buys you length out front. Most guys are picking one or the other. 4. You sling the barrel through. You’re not shoving it or yanking it into the zone. 5. You actually use the ground. Behind the ball you turn. If you’re not using the ground, you’re probably sliding and pulling everything towards the ball. 6. Your bat speed becomes usable. Pushed and pulled bat speed still reads fast vs one pitch one speed. Only one of them shows up on the barrel, in the zone, on time vs pitching. — Cue for your next round: let the ball get deeper than usual, and turn behind a wall. You can scoot close to a net in front of you to get the feeling, too. Then vs moving ball. > Save this for when you need it > Send this to a hitter who needs it right now (And make sure you’re following)

Very excited to watch OF Carson Benge (OSU Cowboy Baseball) this spring. Enjoyed an excellent first full season in 2023, hitting .345 with 17 2B, 7 HR, 43 RBI, and more BB (42) than K (32). Hit .345 with 4 RBI in a 9-game stint on the Cape. Wiry and athletic frame at 6'1", 184-pounds. Serious violence in his swing that is geared towards doing damage and getting the ball in the air. Plenty of hand speed, does a nice job consistently generating back spin. Impressive ability driving the baseball to all fields. Sound approach, above average bat-to-ball skills. Big barrel tip, but consistently on time and gets in a good position to hit. Absolutely pulverizes heaters - .529/.691/.824 slash line against FB 91+. Good athlete with a plus arm in RF that will allow him to stick at the position. Also has some experience on the mound where he showed feel to spin and a FB up to 96. Plays the game extremely hard and at one speed. It is abundantly clear that he loves to play! Potential top-2 round selection this July.

TRANSFER: Duke OF AJ Gracia has jumped into the portal. A few hours late on this, but some context I think is necessary... Gracia has the ability to win the Golden Spikes in 2026. He's my No. 4 ranked colleg prospect in the 2026 Draft. But a few changes must be made. Put simply, he's got to be willing to ambush the baseball. He's consistently run extremely low swing rates and that passivity gets him into too many pitchers' counts. His bat-to-ball skills are bordering on elite regardless of zone or pitch type. He rarely gives away an at-bat. But if Gracia is to transform into that 25-homer/.370 hitter I think a lot of people think he can be, he needs to control the plate appearance. More 'A-Swings' in ambush counts. Drive the boat, don't get towed. Enormous fan of this kid's raw tools. Terrific frame and a gorgeous swing. Whoever lands him could be getting a true difference maker who can take over a series by himself.

My son and I went to the gym late last night to work out some stuff after 3 HS games worth of not hitting the way that he wanted. The session had both a data component and a feel / cue component. As a 17 year old who now has high 60's / low to mid 70's bat speed he has struggled in the last week - specifically against low velocity pitching - to let the ball travel deep enough to get good flush contact. Point being that we had a specific thing to work on. So on the technology side we're using Blast to bat speed, attack angle and VBA, and we're using HitTrax to monitor contact depth in addition to the outcome stuff - exit velocity, launch angle, distance and direction. We also were using two different pitching machines - one offset to the left side, the other offset to the right side. In terms of cues what we ended up with was: - As deep as possible while still being on time - High pitch posture, flat bat path and adjust off if needed But along the way we tried all sorts of stuff - everything from trying to hit a ball to the hot dog cart in oppo foul territory off the left hand off-set machine to trying to find middle of the field ball flight from the right hand offset machine to just going pure let it eat anywhere ball flight off of either machine to score a runner on 2B. In my mind, the best instruction environment for hitting is just a conversation that revolves around: - What were we trying to do vs what did we actually do - What signal can we get about why we did what we did - What adjustments do we need to make to bring our results closer to the intended outcome on the next swing But if the instructor and the player don't even speak the same language...man that conversation is going to be pretty limited in its effectiveness. Because he's 17 we're now able to have these kinds of conversations - with all of these various layers. But the critically important part of the whole thing is that this is an actual two way conversation. Meaning that he's telling me how he feels, we're looking at the data to correlate the feeling to the outcome, we decide on how or if we need to adjust intention for the next swing and we just wash, rinse and repeat that same cycle over and over and over. I wouldn't - and I didn't - coach him this way when he was 12. We used the same tech stack, but the data we paid attention to was a lot more limited. Because that was the level of depth he was able to have a productive conversation about at that time. I'm also exceptionally fortunate that at 17 years old he's still playing and I still get to have these conversations with him.

OF Trevor Condon (Tennessee Baseball) was one of my favorite position players I saw in Jupiter. Collected 7 hits (1 XBH) and 4 RBIs across 5 games. Slightly undersized, but there's some impact (mainly to the pull side) packed into his frame. Wiry, athletic build at 5'11" and 175-lbs. Prototypical top-of-the-order table setter. Explosive and twitchy operation in the box with no-doubt plus bat speed. Feel for the barrel is there, high-level bat-to-ball skills. Controlled the zone well with polished swing decisions in my looks last week. Does tend to hit the ball on the ground, would like to see more line drives. Hit-over-power profile with some PS thump. Gets out of the box unbelievably quick, turned in 70-grade run times. Condon's tantalizing combination of speed and athleticism translates well to centerfield. He can really go and get it and has plenty of range, but if he can shore up his routes (take a more efficient, crisp path to the baseball) he has a chance to become an impact defender. The intangibles with Condon are a nice cherry on top. Advanced baseball sense; stole 2nd on a great dirt ball read, swiped 3rd on a well-executed shuffle lead. Incredibly high motor, plays with his hair on fire. Does not take a pitch off! Always involved, brings the juice! Like the Energizer bunny. Kind of a throwback player in that sense - it's clear he LOVES to play! Think along the lines of Sal Frelick/Slater de Brun (SDB better defender at this point with more of a physical, barrel-chested look). Top 2-3 round type for me this July.

Here we are training “4 second feet.”This SS is choosing to use a prep-step version of a “small walk - creep” to be ready to take a great first step to the batted ball. Remember … Trey Turner is 3.7. Thus, once 4 seconds is mastered, we can cut or add time to simulate different types of runners. This process creates an exceptional internal clock. 4.0 seconds…. includes all plays. Backhand, forehand, slow roller, DP’s. NOTE: For younger players on smaller fields, time your fastest runners from home to first (with swing). Take 3 tents of a second off that time as your base goal. Measure with stopwatch. On with contact of bat, off when pops 1B glove.
