What's a game that was annoyingly hard (borderline impossible) but you went back to it and tried over and over again? My arch-nemesis was Ghosts 'n Goblins. I can't tell you how many hours I poured into it in the 80s. We played the absolute crap out of it, and it was so incredibly unforgiving. Yet we kept playing… again and again. What was your love/hate-relationship game?

I really do think Donkey Kong for the Game Boy is the best Donkey Kong game ever made. I remember the first time I played this game, and I thought it was just a port of the arcade until you beat the 4th level, and then the real game unlocks. It's an awesome puzzle platformer!

This is the issue with many people regarding the ending of LOST. You can dislike it for your own reasons, but thinking it’s the worst ending because “it was all a dream” is just wrong when it was explained in the finale itself, everything was real.

Are men drawn to video games because they offer a space where merit is recognized and rewarded? Maybe. But recognized by who? The game itself? Other players? I’m not totally convinced. It sounds a little too tidy. Still, there’s something real here about how these games hijack the drive for ambition and accomplishment. A lot of them are designed so that the difficulty is just above your current skill level. You usually fail the first couple of times, but you almost succeed. And then you try again. The game subtly adjusts itself to stay just out of reach—close enough to feel attainable, far enough to keep you chasing it. It’s addictive. And when you finally beat the level or complete the quest, it triggers a real sense of satisfaction—like you earned it. I’ve talked to some younger guys who got hooked on gaming and then had this realization: “I should be doing this in real life.” Instead of trying to level up in a game, they started trying to level up in the gym. Same principle. You lift today, stick with it, lift a little more next month, and so on. Eventually your body changes. Two years go by, and you look like a different person. Take that mindset, the drive to improve, to reach the next level, and apply it outside the screen. There are levels to real-life too.
