Nice feature coming to Ghostty on macOS: keep window on top! Can be toggled via both the native menu bar, command palette, or bound to a key. This is a common macOS app feature (e.g. provided by Notes, Calculate, etc.). Feels right. 🥰 (For Linux/GTK users: this should be done at your WM/DE level instead of Ghostty which is more idiomatic. There doesn't seem to be a Wayland protocol for this and I didn't dare even look at the X11 atom nightmare fuel.)

So we're losing almost double that every year from this disease. You'd think that the trillion dollars we put into that war and the daily preoccupation on the news, the nightly news coverage for 20 years the presidential elections that were fixated on it, and it's half the number of people that are effected every single year. Our communities are being torn apart. We need to give this the same priority. I'm very reluctant to dictate a government solution. What we found from touring, this is a small fraction of the places we actually visited. I wanted to see every place that's doing this right, and what we found is there's a tremendous diversity of approaches that are working very very well. One thing almost all of them have in common is that they don't have government support. And so I'm very reluctant to get the government involved in a way that is going to micromanage places like this. I want to make the government support them and that may be through land purchases and through those kinds of contracts but I don't want the government to be coming in and micromanaging. I think this has to be run by NGOs and we have to use a lot of different approaches. You know Franklin Roosevelt when he was launching the New Deal said 'We're going to try these programs and we're going try something one thing at a time and if it doesn't work we're going to abandon it and were going to try something else, but were always going to be trying something.' And all I can guarantee, I can't tell you right now that there's one solution or even a multiplicity of solutions but what I can tell you is that in my administration we're going to solve the problem because I'm going to focus on it. And if there are things that are working we're going to create ecosystems in which those kinds of solutions can proliferate.

Sam Altman on his method for clear thinking: "I'm a huge notetaker. I go through one of these notebooks every two or three weeks." Sam has a very specific system for thinking clearly through writing. As he puts it: "You definitely want a spiral notebook because one thing that's important is you can rip pages out frequently. I take a bunch of notes and then I clearly rip them out so I can look at multiple pages at the same time, and I can crumple them up and throw them on the floor when I'm done." smolvm has hit stable release: v1.0.0! You can now fork smolvm. It means you can fork to create virtual machines off of an existing one in less than 100ms, with all the processes cloned and running. smolvm is the first to have this feature + cross platform compatibility (macOS and linux natively). Here's a demo of a counter continuing on a forked clone while I only started it on the original!

First of its kind? New feature in Ghostty: a web-inspector-style "terminal inspector" targeted at CLI, TUI developers. Built right into the terminal, you can see a live view of terminal state, keyboard events, escape sequences, and much much more. 👻💖 Video tour below. Similar to Firebug with Firefox, I'm hoping this helps usher in a new era of develop-ability for terminal applications by making it much much easier to understand what is going on. When the inspector is not in use, there is no perceivable performance impact (benchmarks show the same). When the inspector is in use, the terminal it is inspecting slows down to about half speed due to the overhead. But this only impacts the terminal being inspected. This is a really early version of the inspector. The data organization is kind of messy, its mostly read-only information right now, and there is a lot more information I want to surface. The next step is making a lot of this data read-write so you can actually modify the terminal live (similar to modifying HTML/CSS live in a web inspector) to trial-and-error some changes. The lack of "feature design" is why so many products over time feel hollow or messy. This isn't visual design. This isn't architectural design. I thought that a short video lecture of what feature design is and a real case study of applying it in Ghostty would be helpful. Feature design is the planning step behind how you're going to solve one or more user problems with a product feature: what that feature looks like, how it feels, and not just how its going to tactically solve these specific problems, but how that solution is going to interface with the edges of other features that currently exist or are planned to exist in the future.

And don't worry, I plan on shipping a built-in "vim mode" table (unbound by default) so you can bind an opinionated "vim mode" with a single line in your config. But, if you want to modify it in any way, that's completely possible because this all works via standard config.

All of the anarchist, antidemocratic ideas of the PayPal Mafia and the “Dark Enlightenment”—to use technology as an “escape”—were already well in process 15 years ago. —The internet as “alternate virtual reality” so you don’t have to “constantly convince people.” This is why he funded Satoshi (Bitcoin), MAGA3X (Pizzagate, Q), and pushed Musk to buy Twitter —PayPal (now blockchain/crypto/BTC) was to “overturn the monetary system” —“Escape” now more often referred to as “exit” —“Autonomous countries” now known as the “network state” JD Vance is a full member of the cult of the broligarchs. Mark Zuckerberg: If software productivity increased like a 100X in two years… the amount of creativity that’s going to be unlocked is going to be massive. And if you look at the overall arc of human society and the economy over a hundred or a hundred fifty years, it’s basically people going from being primarily agrarian and most of human energy going towards just feeding ourselves… to that becoming a smaller and smaller percent. The things that take care of our basic physical needs are a smaller and smaller percent of human energy, which has led to two impacts. One is more people are doing kind of creative and cultural pursuits, and two is that people in general spend less time working and more time on entertainment and culture. If everyone is going to have these superhuman tools to be able to create a ton of different stuff, I think you’re going to get this incredible diversity.
