The drinking game scene in The Return of the King Extended Edition wasn’t part of the original script. Peter Jackson added it later as a fun way to highlight the growing rivalry and friendship between Legolas and Gimli. Gimli’s drunk appearance wasn’t real, of course John Rhys-Davies’ red face and watery eyes were done with makeup and special lenses. Orlando Bloom worked on keeping Legolas completely unfazed for comedic contrast, leading to his famous “I feel a slight tingle in my fingers” moment. The shot of Gimli collapsing on the table was done in a single take, because Rhys-Davies’ heavy prosthetics made multiple attempts too difficult, and Jackson felt the first take captured the perfect comedic timing.
