They sometimes do. Documented cases exist of giraffes killed by direct lightning strikes to the head or by ground current from nearby hits. Their height makes them more vulnerable in open savannas as the tallest objects, but such events are rare enough that the overall risk to any one giraffe stays low.

Lots of critters have nowhere to hide during storms. Ever driven past a field of cows during a storm? There's a famous quote by LBJ: "Being president is like being a jackass in a hailstorm. There's nothing to do but to stand there and take it.", most critters have nothing to do but stand there and take it...

This is literally me on a windy beach day with no umbrella and hair that cost $300 standing tall, looking dramatic, and just praying the storm passes before my extensions give up
