GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke (Thomas Dohmke) confirmed in conversation with me what many suspected but few wanted to say out loud: we've already crossed the threshold where AI generates code faster than humans can meaningfully review it. The era of human oversight in software development is already over.

@ashtom The era of human oversight is over only if the new code is worth the risk of not reviewing it. Unless you are one shot vibe coding, that's still a couple of perf doublings away. The problem is, you won't feel the risk right away, only down the line when your tech debt balloons.

@ashtom The next big thing is good AI oversight in software development — this generation of coding tools just shifts the bottleneck from code generation to code correctness, verification, and human preference capture.

@ashtom Insane how fast this shift is hitting fintech! Trust and compliance can’t lag behind AI. What’s the next move for QA and oversight?

@ashtom These days i'd say i spend about 1% of my time reading the code it writes, and that's when it gets stuck "beating around the bush" and needs an intervention to just say "hey i found one weird line of code here". But 99% of the time it's just coding while i hit "reload".

@ashtom But is it GOOD code? Sure its punched out quickly, but are we guaranteed it fault-free?
