Say what you want about Son of the Mask, believe me... I have. The concept could've worked if New Line Cinema didn't interfere with the production, and especially greenlight the production without fine tuning the script because Jamie Kennedy has explained in his retrospect video on this movie that he told the people in charge that the script was awful and he wanted significant rewrites to fix the issues, they said they would think about it, the next time he saw that they didn't do anything to fix the script. For those who don't know, the original script for the movie was originally a spect script for an unmade horror comedy titled "Baby Formula," it basically shares the same concept of Son of the Mask but everything is treated like a horror movie with comedic and cartoony elements, it was described as "Rosemary's Baby and The Omen meets Chuck Jones."

Knowing it started as a horror comedy pitch makes total sense because that Rosemary Baby meets Chuck Jones concept actually sounds incredible. It really shows how executive rush and ignoring script feedback can completely ruin a premise with real potential.

EXACTLY!!! And I think we need more horror comedies that lean into the cartoony aspects like getting flattened like a pancake, doing the awooga reaction or literally going absolutely ballistic like a pissed off cartoon.

Blending slapstick cartoon absurdity with genuine horror creates a chaotic energy that modern cinema rarely dares to explore. Giving body horror that full Looney Tunes level of exaggeration would instantly make the genre feel fresh and wildly unpredictable.

And another bit of information, the original cut was PG-13 and had several scenes that involved Tim Avery actually wearing the mask more often by impressing his boss and investors by greenlighting his cartoon show based on his Mask persona, and it had a LOT of bad words like for example when Loki called him a knucklehead when explaining who he is in the final version, in the PG-13 he actually said this to him... "Now please... don't be a douche." 🙂
