Gladiator is another example of The Academy getting it totally right. For all the misfires & wrong decisions the #Oscars have made over the years, I 100% believe this film deserved to win the #Oscar for Best Picture & I think Russell Crowe’s win for Best Actor was also deserved.

Ethan Hawke is unbelievable in Training Day & I still believe he deserved to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It wouldn’t matter how great Denzel was in this film- Training Day does not work without Hawke’s brilliance. He is the glue that holds this film together.

Paul Newman deserved to win the Oscar for Best Actor for The Hustler. His snub remains one of the worst snubs ever committed by the Academy. I know Newman eventually won for The Color of Money, but it doesn’t make up for failing to give Newman the award here. This is Paul’s best

Sylvester Stallone was robbed of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Creed. I’ll never let it go. Stallone was shockingly great & Creed smashed my expectations overall. I wanted Sly to win & have another iconic moment in The Rocky franchise, especially so many decades after he won Best Picture for the first film. This snub by The Academy will forever annoy me.

Eddie Murphy deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls. Murphy was the heavy favorite going into the Oscars. His loss was shocking then & it’s still shocking now. Murphy is capable of so much as a dramatic actor. I hope he returns to roles like this.

Kramer vs. Kramer won the Oscar for Best Picture over Apocalypse Now in 1980. I don’t think the The Academy got this right- I think Apocalypse Now needed to win this award for so many reasons. But I’m not sure I’ve ever seen better on-screen acting than in this film. Have you?

Forest Whitaker was utterly terrifying as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland. Biopic performances don’t get much better than this & it’s why Whitaker deserved to win the Oscar for Best Actor. Whitaker, a well-known character actor, goes above & beyond in this film.

Michelle Yeoh’s #Oscar win for Best Actress over Cate Blanchett is a decision by The Academy that I personally don’t believe has aged very well. No shade to Yeoh, who’s had a magnificent career, I just don’t think anyone deserved the award over Blanchett for her work in Tár.

I think Spotlight totally deserved to win Best Picture. Giving the Academy credit isn’t something I make a habit of doing (their fault, look at their track record!), but they got it right here. A strong story combines with a unique cast of veteran actors. Earned its Oscars.

The Irishman might be Martin Scorsese’s best film. You guys know how much this film means to me & it’s the film that helped me get through my dad’s cancer diagnosis. Pacino & De Niro are so, so good in this movie. I still think this deserved the Oscar for Best Picture & Director.
