ETHIOPIA ― 🚨We are deeply alarmed by the brutal killing of three Eritrean asylum seekers by a prison guard in Addis Ababa’s Lafto district on January 22nd. This horrifying incident followed the federal government’s mass arrest of Eritrean asylum seekers in the capital. When 37 detainees allegedly attempted to escape, prison guards responded with deadly force, mercilessly gunning down Hanibal Solomon Gurja and Ataklti Isaias Habtesion on the spot. A third victim later succumbed to his injuries due to deliberate medical neglect. Even more disturbingly, eleven others suffered gunshot wounds and remain imprisoned without medical care, leaving them vulnerable to infections and life-threatening complications. Led by the amazing Hanxiao Jiang 👉 PhysTwin combines **Gaussian splatting** with **inverse dynamics optimization** based on simple **spring-mass** systems. ⚙️ The result? Real-time, action-conditioned 3D video prediction under novel interactions (i.e., 3D world models). 🔑 A few key takeaways: 1. Having the right structure (e.g., particles/masses) helps navigate the trade-off between sample efficiency, generalization, and broad applicability. 2. Visual foundation models (VFMs) have matured to the point where they can provide rich supervision for world modeling (e.g., tracking, shape completion). 3. Beyond VFMs, many crucial components have come together in recent years: Gaussian splats for rendering, NVIDIA Warp for high-performance simulation, and scene/asset generation from a wide range of labs and companies. I'm convinced that Gaussian Splats will be an integral part of any data engine as an underlying representation. So I've started putting together a repo that: 1. Given a single image, perform image outpainting 🖼️🖌️ 2. Estimate a monocular depth map on the outpainted image 📏 3. Train a Gaussian Splat initialized from the monocular depth 🎓✨ 4. Warp to new views, perform inpainting on the missing masks -> Train new splat 🔄🎨 This is going to be integrated into exo-egoforge, but I wanted to start with the simple single-image version before moving to a multi-video implementation There's some weirdness in the final rerun visualization, but the trained splat looks great 🎉! This is all based on the very cool VistaDream paper ( .github.io/) More on this next week!

Gemini-powered robot can now effectively debug itself! I've been obsessed with two main questions in robotics: can robots learn from their own mistakes without humans in the loop, and how much can we leverage synthetic data? Spoiler: yes, and it's surprisingly elegant once you have the right primitives in place. The architecture is fairly simple (and optimized for GPU_Poor users): Component I: Gemini Brain ♊️ - Gemini 2.0 Flash analyzes all training episodes through both camera perspectives - Gemini 2.0 Pro creates a summary of training data, highlighting biases, limitations, etc. - Train policy p0 on this initial data, run evaluation episodes - Ask Gemini to categorize successes vs. failures (more insightful than you'd expect) - Based on both analyses, Gemini generates specific augmentation recommendations What's interesting here isn't that we're using LLMs for robotics - it's that we're closing the loop between perception, failure analysis, and targeted data generation. Component II: Data Generation with Scene Consistency The tricky part was maintaining consistency across both camera perspectives while generating new data. Three current augmentations: - Frame flipping and polarity reversals - Grounded-SAM + OpenCV for object color manipulation - Gemini to identify empty space and generate distractions in the scene …and repeat, ha! Building on the previous paper, in this study we compare a continuous “smooth return” S2>S1 model with an event-driven one, where long periods of relative calm are punctuated by short, intense episodes of global reorganisation. Both models cover the same time window. Neither uses archaeological data in its construction. When compared against where early humans and early civilizations actually appear and persist, the difference is statistically robust. The smooth model behaves like background noise. The event-driven model lines up in time and space far better than chance allows, even after aggressive temporal and spatial randomization tests.
