Hunga Tonga is still affecting the atmosphere. On January 15, 2022, the underwater volcano erupted in the South Pacific. It blasted roughly 160 million metric tons of water vapor into the stratosphere, increasing levels by an unprecedented 10%. Most major eruptions cool the planet by injecting reflective aerosols. Hunga Tonga erupted underwater and punched seawater high into the atmosphere. Water vapor is the most dominant greenhouse gas. NASA warned the eruption could have a temporary warming effect. Global temperatures then spiked in 2023 and 2024. Predictably though, the spike was sold as proof of accelerating CO2-driven warming. NEW: Southern California is getting obliterated by torrential rain causing flash flood warnings. The storm even caused a ‘Seafoam storm’ where strong winds blew foam onto people standing on the shore. The storm was thanks to an ‘Atmospheric River’ which is “relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics.” (NOAA) The average Atmospheric River carries the equivalent amount of water as the average flow at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

New research says it isn't CO2 driving the climate, rather it's gradients and water vapor. A 2025 study in Frontiers argues the real thermostat is the vertical temperature gradient and the water cycle. Water vapor and clouds account for about 95% of the atmosphere's radiative effect. CO2 contributes roughly 4-5%, with only 4% of that human-made. Without the lapse rate, i.e. the steady cooling with altitude, extra CO2 would have no warming effect at all. On Earth, air cools about 6.5C per kilometer, and that gradient, not carbon, sets surface warmth. In their model, doubling CO2 adds at most 1.5C, or nothing. Moisture, clouds and natural dynamics run the climate. CO2 is just along for the ride.

Water simulation has always been the holy grail of FX, requiring an incredible amount of computation to get right. For Battleship (2012), ILM had to reinvent their water systems to allow them to be able to deliver the show with it's plethora of shots in water. The alien ships are hundreds of feet long and therefore displace massive amounts of water. This, coupled with them making aggressive movements meant that hundreds of millions of droplets of water had to be simulated per shot to get a believable look of water interaction. Before their new water systems, artists were only able to get "1-2 simulations done per day", but with the new system they were able to "do many simulations per day", increasing the iterations and therefore the creative freedom and expression for the artists. ILM has since reworked their water systems multiple times, now being more powerful and accurate than ever, utilizing more powerful hardware and more accurate and efficient simulation algorithms. Today, water simulation is something that can be done a lot easier than before, even being able to do it in real-time with tools such as Unreal Engine and LiquiGen.
