And it had been maintained by one person in his spare time for the last 20 years. And then a couple years ago, somebody just decided to start helping him. They jumped in, fixed a bunch of bugs, and did a lot of great work. And then that first person got tired of working on it. So he handed the whole project over to this other person. It turned out that other person was just a pseudonym and was not a real person. And within six months of getting control of the project, they had put in a carefully orchestrated set of malware that was really hard to detect and no one noticed. And because it was so widely used, the exploit would've basically given that person remote access to any computer running that piece of software, which was basically everything connected to the Internet. But because it was open source and the code was transparent, some random engineer just happened to be running some benchmarks on a weekend. And he noticed that program was a little bit slower than it used to be, and that it was making a weird cryptographic operation to check something. And right before this thing got widely deployed across every device, he dug in, and discovered that there was a backdoor put in. This was the closest thing to a full-blown internet crisis that we’ve ever had. And they still have no idea who did it. It was just an anonymous email account. No one ever traced it back to an individual. And that's the long game. This person spent years just doing good work and earning the communities trust.”

In 1901, divers pulled a lump of corroded bronze out of a two thousand year old shipwreck. It took the next century to understand what it was, and the answer broke the timeline of human history. It's called the Antikythera Mechanism, and it is the oldest known computer on earth. It was built by the ancient Greeks, around 100 BC, and it should not exist. Nothing else of its sophistication would appear anywhere in the world for more than a thousand years after it... It was found by sponge divers off the Greek island of Antikythera, in the wreck of a trading ship that had sunk in the first century BC, surrounded by bronze statues and pottery. The corroded fragments looked like nothing at first, and sat largely ignored in a museum in Athens. Only over the following decades, and especially with modern X-ray and CT scanning in our own century, did researchers finally see inside it. What they found was a machine. Behind its bronze face was a system of at least thirty interlocking precision gears, cut and arranged with a sophistication that would not be matched until the geared astronomical clocks of medieval Europe, well over a thousand years later. It was, in the words of the team that studied it, a mechanical computer that worked by turning astronomical theory into bronze... And it did extraordinary things. You turned a hand crank on the side, and the mechanism calculated the positions of the sun, the moon, and the five planets the Greeks knew. It tracked the phases of the moon. It predicted solar and lunar eclipses years in advance. It even displayed the four-year cycle of the ancient Olympic Games. A person standing in the ancient world could set this device to a date and watch the heavens be calculated in front of them, by gears, by hand. 37 years ago, the world’s largest aircraft, the An-225 Mriya, took to the skies for the very first time. That historic flight lasted over an hour and set the stage for the aircraft to eventually achieve a total of 240 world records. The maiden flight took off from the Kyiv-Antonov-1 airfield, manned by a crew of test pilots, and concluded with a successful landing in Hostomel. Notably, the name Mriya ("Dream") was painted onto the fuselage only the night before it was rolled out of the hangar. Originally built for the Soviet space program, the An-225 was designed to transport the Buran space shuttle and components of the Energia rocket system. Following the collapse of the USSR, it became the property of Ukraine. Though it was mothballed for a period, it was later restored and modified for heavy-lift commercial cargo. In the opening days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Mriya was destroyed during the attack on Hostomel. However, Ukraine plans to bring the "Dream" back to life. I had never seen the Soviet Krechet spacesuit, developed for the Soviet Moon expedition, this close up and in such detail. Holy shit, the dieselpunk level is unreal. I mean, if the Americans flew and landed their spacecraft with a full-fledged computer on board, the Soviets were supposed to fly basically on mechanics and automation. In other words, straight-up Newtonian: everything as lever-and-vacuum-tube as possible — and the spacesuit is from exactly the same universe. And yes, in theory, they could have landed the spacecraft, but there was a high chance it would have been a “landing” with no return. Since the Soviet rocket was weaker, only one person was supposed to land on the Moon, not two as in the U.S. program. That’s why, in the tests, you can see them practicing ways for a cosmonaut to get back on his feet if he fell. Because there would be no one there to help you. It really does break your brain when you imagine a person in this “canvas-pump-and-dial” suit — alone, on the Moon. But it has to be admitted: yes, there is a certain charm to this kind of extreme engineering minimalism turned up to full dieselpunk.

It was manufactured by the Hupfeld company (officially Ludwig Hupfeld AG), a highly renowned manufacturer of mechanical musical instruments based in Leipzig, Germany.
