When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!

Fascinated by the idea becoming popular on the left rn that China’s AI boom and hyperscale AI data centers are amazing and good (bc they use closed loop cooling??), but the U.S. AI boom/data centers here are evil and bad and must be stopped at all cost.

.Satya Nadella just put the whole "water" debate to rest. Datacenters run on a closed loop cooling system, the water usage of a datacenter for an entire year is roughly equivalent to a usage of 1 restaurant!

That water has to be flushed out every couple years Whistleblowers say that chemical water is being pushed into our streams and waterways and may have extremely limited cleaning requirements depending on state “I'm getting whistleblowers on the inside saying that they're taking all that waste and they're just running it down into the sewers. They're wanting to go to more closed cooling systems, and in those closed cooling systems, you still are gonna be using chemicals. There's no regulations about every 2 years when you have to clean out a cooling closed system, where are you gonna throw all of those chemicals?” “Taking polluted water and running it through system and dumping it into a river and it flows downstream, that will have a natural dilution, would resolve the issue, and it's not. Even if it's a closed cooling system, that water that's recycling in there, eventually they have to clean those systems. They have to release that water. And are there any regulations to look at what chemicals aren't in that water before we release it into the environment and just create another pollution issue?” “Right now it's a free-for-all out there.” It’s not a complete free for all, it depends on the states and general federal regulations. NY just became the first state to pause AI data center permits. Banning is the wrong move, here's the fix instead: 1) Build their own power - Data centers should fund their own electrical infrastructure. 2) Allow small modular nukes - During a blizzard or grid emergency, the data center has to switch power back to the grid to help residents. 3) Incentivize next-gen cooling - Offer state credits to companies developing advanced cooling tech to cut water use. 4) Set distance rules, not bans - Require data centers to sit a set distance from populated areas.

At NVIDIA GTC, Lenovo’s Jon Alexander explained that across 4,400 global locations, many sites still aren’t ready for liquid cooling. Some environments support megawatts of power, others are limited to air cooling in last-mile telco facilities. That reality is shaping how AI infrastructure actually gets deployed. At the same time, AI is moving so fast that supply chain and time-to-market are becoming competitive advantages. The companies that can build, ship, and deploy infrastructure quickly are the ones that will keep up with demand.

Water is one of the biggest concerns surrounding large AI data centers. Lake Wales sits over an aquifer that already supports families, agriculture, and future growth. These facilities require enormous amounts of cooling water, and once they expand, demand only grows.
