Not that you need more homework but if you get a chance to watch the US edit (Godzilla 1985) you should. The additional writing / story is worse but the editing completely improves the pacing and overall tone (especially the horror). Really fascinating to compare the two.

People kind of talk like godzilla was always beloved in japan but outside of late showa he's either explicitly a villain or understood to be beyond good and evil so his death's are generally celebrated. It's really not until '14 he's an unambiguous hero again
