Isn't this just a terrible answer? How could GDP's imperfect correlation with life satisfaction make it more important than life satisfaction?

“Religious faith is disappearing; social trust is declining; deracinated consumerism is replacing family, friendship, community. We’re miserable.” “Lol, that’s impossible. GDP is still going up. Trust me, you’re happy.”

Within already rich countries, this is complete bullshit. Of course poor countries have lower rates of general wellbeing because they often lack the necessities of a good life. But once countries gain wealth, endless gdp increase does not map well with social wellbeing.

It is not. If we had slaves, this would increase the GDP.

GDP per capita mainly valuable when its bad, I mean by that is a normal pulse is 60-100 BPM, now you can have 80BPM & have cancer so youre **not healthy** BUT we know if you dont have 60-100 BPM then youre unhealthy, so GDP per capita is good but its NOT whole picture

Loneliness and GDP per capita are not correlated at all, let alone 0.95

Speed in cars is correlated strongly with horsepower. But if you only make the engine bigger (GDP), your car will be slower, not faster. You also need to develop the brakes, suspension, and aerodynamics (cultural factors).

These people are in for a very rude awakening when they realize 50 years is not a long time.

Something happened where most people in white countries don't care about their people or culture being preserved, but in places like Japan, mass immigration would drop their happiness standards.

Okay, but then shouldn't we just use the cheapest signal that's correlated with GDP? I reckon GDP is costly to measure.

Or maybe.... GDP per capita, Self reported well being, and self reported happiness are all measures indicating something else. Let's call that thing virtue. Common virtue among citizens produces these things as trailing indicators of its predominance among the people.

There is some truth to that, but it’s trivial. A nation can have a great GDP and be an evil place. “Man does not live on bread alone.”

AllGoodOnPaper 的头像

Uncompelling answer. It may be correlated now, but everyone can imagine a place where the correlation falls apart. It's trivial for me to envision, for me personally, a situation where I have more money but am less happy.
