Palmer Luckey: “I read thousands of books before I was 13” Asked about his experience of being homeschooled as a child, Oculus and Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey replies: “I was really lucky . . . there were [a lot] of things where I was interested for my own reasons and very good at self-directed learning. I read thousands of books before I was 13. Carl Sagan put it beautifully. "If I were to read a book a week for my entire adult lifetime, and I lived an ordinary lifetime, when I was all done, I would have read maybe a few thousand books. No more. In this library, that's from about here to about here. But that's only a tenth of a percent or so of the total number of books in the library. The trick is to know which books to read."

So if the friction level gets reduced, we do more of that thing.” This is why Jeff believes the Kindle is so important: “I can tell you that the people who buy a Kindle read 4x as many books in the 12 months after they’ve bought the Kindle than they did in the 12 months prior to buying the Kindle. It was 2020, and you said, "Books are the closest thing you ever come to finding cheat codes for real life. You can access the entire learnings of someone else's career in a few hours." I was on a coast to coast flight and sitting next to me was a rather well known Silicon Valley future founder. We talked and I mentioned I was going to read 3 books by the time we get to Newark, New Jersey. He slept, woke up 20 minutes before we landed and said “no way you read 3 books”, I showed him how. His mind was blown. Your eyes don’t get tired (do blink though) and your hands don’t get tired (prop up a phone is you use that) all you get is a powerful secret hack to get more information and insights. Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger on why reading fast is overrated: At a Berkshire Hathaway meeting, shareholder Keith McGawan asks Buffett for advice on reading faster, noting that Buffett gets through five newspapers a day plus a steady diet of 10Ks and 10Qs. Buffett's answer is disarmingly humble. Despite his legendary reading habit, he confesses: "Unfortunately, I'm not a fast reader." He even adds that Charlie can read faster than he can, and that "it's a huge advantage to be able to read fast." Then he tells a story on himself, by way of Woody Allen: "I read War and Peace last night in 20 minutes. It's about Russia." That punchline, Buffett admits, hits a little too close: "that's the problem I have when I try and read fast. I get all through reading the book and I say it's about business." But for Buffett, the point was never the speed. It's the act itself: "There's hardly anything more pleasurable... than reading and reading and reading and reading. And Charlie and I do a lot of it. We continue to do a lot of it." Then Munger reframes the entire question and quietly dismantles the premise: "I think speed is overestimated. I had a roommate at Caltech who had a very distinguished mind and I could do problems faster than he could, but he never made a mistake and I did. A lot of Epstein experts out here haven’t even read the book. Anyone trying to tell you he didn’t work for Israel who hasn’t read One Nation Under Blackmail is either intentionally spinning a narrative or entirely unserious. I have yet to meet anyone who’s read it and disputes the claims Whitney Webb makes. But really, this video is meant as a reminder- no amount of scrolling X will ever substitute for reading a book. Read more books.
