I read thousands of books before I was 13. And the challenge is you just don’t know what your blind spots are. The chessboard is a lot bigger than just building a good product.” As CEO, everything from strategy to building and managing a team is your responsibility. When asked how he scaled from coding the first version of Dropbox himself to managing an organization with thousands of employees, Drew responds: “Reading was probably the single most valuable thing that I did.” To decide what to read, he would also ask himself the question: One, two, and five years from now, when I look back on today, what will I wish I had been learning? In terms of individual books, Drew recommends High Output Management by Andy Grove and The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker for managing and scaling an organization. But he also argues that being a good CEO requires having good judgment about a lot of different things, and says Poor Charlie’s Almanac by Charlie Munger is probably the best book he’s read for that. This is the first time I came across you and you said something that I absolutely love, and I had in my notebook, and I went to find when I took it. It was 2020, and you said, "Books are the closest thing you ever come to finding cheat codes for real life. You can access the entire learnings of someone else's career in a few hours." Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger on why reading fast is overrated: At a Berkshire Hathaway meeting, shareholder Keith McGawan asks Buffett for advice on reading faster, noting that Buffett gets through five newspapers a day plus a steady diet of 10Ks and 10Qs. Buffett's answer is disarmingly humble. Despite his legendary reading habit, he confesses: "Unfortunately, I'm not a fast reader." He even adds that Charlie can read faster than he can, and that "it's a huge advantage to be able to read fast." Then he tells a story on himself, by way of Woody Allen: "I read War and Peace last night in 20 minutes. It's about Russia." That punchline, Buffett admits, hits a little too close: "that's the problem I have when I try and read fast. I get all through reading the book and I say it's about business." But for Buffett, the point was never the speed. It's the act itself: "There's hardly anything more pleasurable... than reading and reading and reading and reading. And Charlie and I do a lot of it. We continue to do a lot of it." Then Munger reframes the entire question and quietly dismantles the premise: "I think speed is overestimated. I had a roommate at Caltech who had a very distinguished mind and I could do problems faster than he could, but he never made a mistake and I did. I have yet to meet anyone who’s read it and disputes the claims Whitney Webb makes. But really, this video is meant as a reminder- no amount of scrolling X will ever substitute for reading a book. soobin is reading poetry book lately to improve his vocabulary! 🐰 actually, i don’t really read poetry books because i enjoy it. it’s more like to improve my vocabulary. so when i read a poetry book, if there’s a word i don’t know, i write it all down in a notebook. by the time i finish a whole book, a page is completely full. there are just so many words i don’t know. 🐰i look up all their meanings, learn a lot of new words, and basically use poetry books to expand my range of vocabulary. even though i don’t really understand them that well, i just keep reading them diligently 🐰 i want to be able to express myself more diversely. with my current way of expressing things, honestly, all i can really say are like “wow! awesome! so happy! crazy!” so compared to how deep my feelings really are, what i say comes out kind of shallow, so i wanted to match that depth a little better

He avoids new books and basically doesn't read anything published in the past 50 years. The problem with new books isn't that they're bad. The problem is that everybody else is reading them, which doesn't give you much edge as a writer. In the words of The Cultural Tutor: "The simplest reason not to read something published in the last 50 years is because that's what everyone else is reading. The only books that most people read are books published in last, not even ... In the last six years, in the last two years. I'm not disparaging these authors. They've done incredibly well for themselves, and I have no doubt their books are filled with marvels and wonderful, wonderful things, but the rest of the world is reading them. And it's a simple fact of life that if you consume, you read what everyone else is reading, then the likelihood that you will write what they are writing, and worst of all, think what they are thinking increases. It's not certain, but if we all read the same books, we all think the same things."
