I got to share the ring with a lot of my dawgs today in the backyard . Didn’t get the dub but hearing this from Jordan, a guy who has looked out for me since we met and a guy that knows what it takes to be great, meant the world to me. The Brain is speaking truth here, I love this and want it more than anything, and I know the rest of these guys feel the same way! THIS IS WHAT WE WORK FOR AND WE GONNA KEEP WORKIN. My Chinese parents land today to meet their new grandson. I tell my kids "I love you" every day. My dad has never said it to me once. I know he loves deeply. He just never says it. I once overheard him reading "I Love You Through and Through" to my daughter. I froze. He was saying it. Over and over. Just not to me. A few years ago, I told a story for The Moth and NPR about my dad, and how we learned to speak love between the lines. It won the GrandSlam. Sharing it today, because they're on a plane to meet the newest person he'll love without saying it. 🎧

Meiselas: We need to really reevaluate and reflect on what the hell is happening with Israel. We have to all acknowledge the genocide taking place in Palestine right now. We have to all work to make sure that it is American policy to stop this genocide. And it should be disqualifying for anybody who doesn't call it a genocide and who doesn't work to end the genocide and who doesn't work for a Palestinian state.

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who sent me love and messages after Nicki shouted me out last week and told y’all to follow me. The work we do here is for her. I don’t get paid for it, we do it because we’ve built a genuine relationship with her, because we appreciate her, and because we’re committed to sharing her story, the one the world constantly tries to hide or twist I love everybody in this ecosystem. Roc Nation tried to name the Barbz in their illegitimate case just to upset us, but it didn’t work, and we all got love from Nicki. If you’re a Barb, you’re family. I was like, “Ah, I don’t want to go get my hair and makeup done”. Anne has such an incredible career. There are lists and lists of movies that we can all watch and learn something from. So to get to see that up close is a real luxury. And we became great friends, which was really lovely. I know you had worked with Chris before, but it had been a while. For me, it was my first time. Had to give this its own post. Excuse me while I ramble … Been thinking a lot about what Jamie Lee Curtis asked - what does it mean to me to be respected in my line of work? Honestly? I’m shocked I was able to keep it together on the spot to give a coherent response that I actually feel pretty good about but now that I’ve had more time to sit with it - being respected means everything because I know the work I’m putting out is truly me. It took me time to find my voice in this space and to pinpoint what I wanted to bring to it. When I found it, I didn’t let it go. There’s endless pressure nudging journalists in one direction or another, and yes, we all have to evolve and adapt a bit, but when I figured out the key values that were guiding my compass most, those became a non-negotiable guiding light. So the idea of being respected really does mean the world because I’m just being myself, doing work I genuinely love and take great pride in.

Two weeks ago, I got laid off from my job. I always knew it was a possibility. I’ve worked in tech long enough to see layoffs happen over and over again. When my wife and I moved to Northern California and bought a house, I started thinking that I should probably have a backup plan if it ever happened to me. So I started a stump removal business. I bought a stump grinder and started putting the marketing skills I’ve learned over the years to work. I made flyers, road signs and business cards. Built a website with a bunch of local pages for SEO. Set up my Google Business profile. Reached out to tree companies and started building relationships. A few months later, I’m #3 on Google locally and on track to do around $50k in the first year. Then I actually got laid off. I’m still looking for my next role in marketing, but I’m really glad I decided to build something on the side before I needed it. And with all the uncertainty around AI and what it means for jobs long term, I also like knowing I have a business where the work has to be done in the real world. Bonus: After working in an office for the last 10 years, I forgot how good it feels to work outside and actually see what you accomplished at the end of the day. There’s something pretty satisfying about showing up to a yard with a giant stump and leaving with it gone.
