Let me tell you about my father's last day alive with as much detail as possible. My dad got dressed, grabbed his lunch and coffee, hugged and kissed my mom goodbye, slipped on his hat for the day, loaded his lunch, his work boots, his coffee in his work van. He patted our dog on his head goodbye and drove off to pick up his crew for work. He should've been picking up the last of his guys before heading to finish up construction on some houses. 5 minutes later, unbeknownst to all of us, my dad had been shot inside his van by ICE agents in unmarked cars.

I’m on a lifelong mission to catch at least one epic road game every season, chasing the electric atmosphere of college football’s greatest stadiums. 🏟️🏈 Two years ago I made the trip to Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, and even got to enjoy the Oregon coast while I was there. Last season I headed up to Seattle to experience Husky Stadium, checked out the historic Pike Place Market, and got the full tailgate experience with Sailgating on Lake Washington. This year I’ve got my sights set on Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas or heading out to SoCal to see the Buckeyes take on the USC Trojans to check another bucket-list college football destination(s) off the list. My companion and I sit back mind blown and get to experience the greatest surge and transformation of missionary work in history before our eyes. Suddenly we have entire zones of missionaries coming into the mission every transfer. Who else got to experience this as a missionary? Who remembers the 2013 “Hastening the Work of Salvation” broadcast and the reveal of an army of missionaries in a choir at the Marriott Center.

The scariest part of getting laid off wasn’t losing the paycheck. It was realizing I didn’t want to go back to engineering. I’d been a software engineer for six years when it ended. I kept opening Figma instead of my code editor. At some point, I had to be honest with myself. A year later, I have: - clients I love - a YouTube channel that brings in work - a wedding app I’m designing and building myself - projects I get to work on with my husband Chris None of this was in the plan when I got that layoff email, so cheers to the first year of many❤️
