On the sacred day of Gowri Habba, DCM D.K. Shivakumar claimed that “Chamundi Betta and Chamundi Devaru are not Hindu property.” This remark is utterly condemnable. Chamundi Betta is a Shakti Peetha - sanctified by the Shastras and revered by crores of Hindus. The temple was, is, and will always remain Hindu property. The people of Karnataka respect every religion, but they will never tolerate the continuous assault on Hindu festivals, traditions, and temples.

An auto-rickshaw driver ruled Madras’s red-light underworld, buried six victims inside the brick walls of his home—and threatened to expose powerful politicians before walking to the gallows at dawn. The reason might surprise you. In the late 1980s, the bustling coastal hub of Thiruvanmiyur in Madras (now Chennai) fell under the quiet control of Gowri Shankar, notoriously known on the streets as "Auto Shankar." Outwardly, he was a flamboyant auto driver who drove cinema stars and local patrons. Behind closed doors, Shankar ran an extensive illicit empire: bootlegging moonshine, running organized prostitution dens, and operating a private muscle squad. He operated with total impunity, shielded by corrupt local police officers and influential political patrons who frequented his safehouses. Between 1988 and 1989, that quiet impunity turned into a trail of blood: When his associates and sex workers grew suspicious or threatened to report his crimes, Shankar eliminated them without hesitation. Over a span of two years, Shankar and his gang murdered six individuals—including Lalitha, Sudalai, Ravi, Sampath, Mohan, and Govindaraj. In his residential house in Thiruvanmiyur, victims were strangled or drugged, their bodies incinerated or buried directly beneath the flooring and sealed behind freshly plastered brick walls. The house of cards collapsed in late 1989: Relative of a missing victim, Subbulakshmi, refused to back down when police dismissed her inquiries, relentlessly tracking phone leads and confronting Shankar's gang. Sensing the net tightening, an accomplice broke rank and tipped off investigators. Forensic teams broke through the concrete floors and hollow brick walls of Shankar's residence, uncovering charred human bones and personal effects, exposing Chennai’s most horrific burial ground. Shankar was arrested alongside his gang, but the drama was far from over: In 1990, in an audacious escape that embarrassed the state government, Shankar and his associates slipped out of Chennai's Central Prison, fleeing across state borders until police commandos captured him weeks later in Rourkela, Odisha. While locked inside Salem Central Prison, Shankar penned an explosive tell-all autobiography, naming senior IPS officers and high-profile cabinet ministers who had allegedly patronized his brothels and commissioned underworld hits. The manuscript sparked a historic Supreme Court battle over press freedom (R. Rajagopal v. State of Tamil Nadu), establishing landmark privacy and publication rights in India. The legal hammer fell with absolute finality: The courts found Shankar guilty of six murders, sentencing him and his key accomplices to death. At dawn on April 27, 1995, inside Salem Central Prison, 41-year-old Auto Shankar was executed by hanging.
