It's not "deception" - it's just what the map is for. There's no possible way to represent a 3d globe on a flat surface without distorting it in some way. You have to choose the distortion that suits your needs. The Mercator projection, for example, is designed for maritime navigation, since it allows compass bearings to be shown as straight lines. It works perfectly for that - but it causes the maps to be distorted.
