Grateful we decided to build the Linear mobile app native from the beginning. We wanted to make the best mobile experience we could. Some really nice additions coming soon.

@linear We started react native for about 2 weeks, then immediately switched to iOS/swift native for our mobile app 😅 Your customers deserve the best possible experience, no compromise

@linear does the same philosophy applies to counter your bloated electron desktop as well or it's just a hypocrisy on mobile apps only?

On desktop there isn’t a clear preference. Lot of people use web, app or both. I can’t think of native desktop app that also has great web experience. Apple tried to do their cloud versions or native apps but it just feels weird. It’s hard to make native app with native design, and then do that on web. Either it’s weird or it’s different. I think most apps these days that people in our industry use are electron or web (slack, Figma, cursor, codex, vscode, Claude, gdocs, gcal…)

@linear i thought we're talking about performance not industry standard? by your logic, electron and web apps are faster than native desktop apps because everybody use them.

@linear You do need to support real Liquid Glass though, the custom glass you guys made is jarring.

@linear I really like your mobile app! So much so that it’s on my home screen!

@linear Linear mobile is so poorly designed. I can only use it on desktop.

@linear Great to see everyone moving to Native for performance. Saw the same with @NotionHQ and @Shopify . Maintaining 2 codebases was the major concern earlier and AI has definitely removed that blocker.

yes i see it the same way! every cross platform framework claims "yeah we are using native controls and you wont notice the js bridge under the hood", still you know exactly when an app is react native and not truely native. bundle size completly overblown. since LLMs managing multiple codebases simultaniously is just a breeze so why not straight go the right way to do it💪

See that's what I don't get. It's not some crazy difficult thing, yet these companies worth tens to hundreds of billions of dollars, will cry about how it's just too resource intensive, how they just can't support so many native platforms (2?). and right as they're giving excuses about that, they'll be boasting about spending tens of millions of dollars on useless crap, like yeah we totally to renovate this 100,000sqf warehouse to turn into our office where it has 8 meditation rooms, 4 gyms and 26 lounges all outfitted with 20 thousand dollar couches and 10 thousand dollar lounge chairs plus don't forget about the giant plant wall at the entrance that costs 200k a year to maintain

@linear One of the reasons we did it. We also saw mobile apps in our space were web based, not very good and are manned by very small teams. There would be billion dollar companies with 0.5-2 engineers working on the mobile apps.

@linear The codebase is invisible. The weird UI isn’t. That’s why native can be a product decision, not a stack preference.

@linear every hybrid app team secretly regrets it, native won here

@linear spent 3 days in flutter platform channels last month for one scroll behavior that still felt off. every time i hit that wall i think about exactly this tradeoff. was there a real internal debate about RN before you committed?

@linear the underrated part is that native hands you the platform's small behaviours for free. scroll handoff, keyboard, back gesture, text selection. nobody puts those on a roadmap but they are exactly what makes an app feel slightly wrong.
