In Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Setsuko’s death is almost unbearable to watch. The film doesn’t dramatize it or offer relief, it just lets the moment unfold quietly, which somehow makes it even more devastating.

“Setsuko never woke up.” After everything Seita does to keep her alive through the firebombings, starvation, and isolation, Grave of the Fireflies (1988) ends their story with one of the most brutally matter-of-fact lines ever spoken in film.

The ending of Grave of the Fireflies (1988) leaves behind the kind of silence only a few films can. The movie starts by telling exactly where it’s headed, yet nothing prepares for how deeply Setsuko and Seita’s final moments linger afterward.
