Deputy Prime Minister /Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar Ishaq Dar chaired a Committee meeting to review the existing Guidelines for the Establishment of Universities and Higher Education Institutions in Pakistan. The committee reviewed the draft 2026 HEC Regulatory Framework for the Establishment and Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan, in the light of direction given by the committee in the last meeting .The revlevant stakeholders provided a detailed briefing to the Committee about the work they have carried out in this regard. The committee appreciated the efforts of the Higher Education. DPM/ FM directed HEC to incorporate further recommendations provided by this committee in today’s meeting and submit the revised draft to the Ministry of Federal Education for onward submission to the Federal Cabinet for approval. DPM/ FM while highlighting government’s commitment towards quality education stated that strengthening Pakistan’s higher education system and impartting knowledge through highest standards of quality, transparency, and excellence is the hallmark of this government. The Meeting was attended by Ministers of Law , IPC and Education and Professional Training, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, Federal Secretaries, HEC team , Rector NUST senior government officials and relevant stakeholders.

This is managed by the Department of Agriculture (So it’s not impacted) - Federal Pell Grant Program, federal Family Education Loan Program, William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, federal Perkins Loan Programs, all not going anywhere. They're still gonna be alive and well, just moving to the Department of Treasury (This is BIG one) - All functions, programs and authorities of the Secretary of Education under the Individuals with Disability Education Act shall be transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services. This is your IEPs, your early intervention, your special education grants, your free special education services. Those all will just be moving to the Department of Health and Human Services (Not financially impacted) - Each authority and program of the Office of Indian Education of the Department of Education shall be transferred to the Department of Interior. Those are programs designed for Native Americans specifically in their education (Not financially impacted) - Title Eight of Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 shall be transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services. This includes the financial assistant that local education agencies get that lose property tax revenue due to the presence of federally connected students. So those who live on Indian lands have military family or parents. Those in federally, low rent housing, those types of situations, this is where all that falls, and it will just be moving to the Department of Health and Human Services. There’s lots of things we need to do to stamp out antisemitism but what we do in education is a big part of it. Today we announced a number of reforms to teacher training, teacher resources and the national curriculum. We are also strengthening the powers and the penalties of the tertiary education regulator that oversees universities. To drive these reforms and recommend further actions to prevent and respond to antisemitism today we announced the establishment of the Antisemitism Education Taskforce. It will be chaired by David Gonski, a towering figure in Australia who knows the education system back to front.

I was happy to receive the "Outstanding Higher Education Stalwart of the Year" award for 2024 from The Economic Times (Economic Times) last night in Delhi. Of course, there is still so much to do. I returned from the US in 1998 to join IIT Bombay (IIT Bombay) as a faculty member. After 25 years in the IIT system (18 years as a faculty member in IIT Bombay and 7 years in IIT Delhi, of which 6 years as the Director of IIT Delhi), I am now with the BITS Pilanii as a group Vice Chancellor since March 2023. All these three institutions happen to be the Institutions of Eminence (IoE) as recognized by the Ministry of Education Ministry of Education, Govt of India. #IIT Delhi received the #IoE status during my time as the Director IIT Delhi following a highly competitive process. Higher education needs major structural #reforms in India. We are archaic when it comes to managing our best institutions. While Public institutions are dependent on Govt of India for 90% of their funding, Private institutions are dependent on tuition fee for 90% of their sustenance. Both are flawed #financial #models. We need to develop a #diversified financial model where endowments, overheads on research and tuition fee contribute an equal share. It requires major #policy tweaks. We need to seriously look at Study Now-Pay Later kind of models on the lines of Australia's HELP scheme. American higher education funding models burden the students with #debt. So much needs to be done in this space in India. Without a proper financial model in place, our institutions are totally at the mercy of bureaucrats and politicians. State #universities are already on their knees and it won't be long before the same happens with our centrally funded Institutions. Industry is the bridge between #research (generation of knowledge) and #innovation (utilization of knowledge for public good). With India ranked 66th among the 130 countries when it comes to academia-industry collaborations, it's clear what we need to do to promote innovation. It's again the Government which needs to make favorable policies for promoting #academia-#industry collaborations. Hope to see some of these #reforms taken up by the new government.

Today, the Senate HELP Committee voted to advance bipartisan legislation I introduced with Senators Tim Kaine and Lisa Murkowski to prevent the Department of Education from transferring critical offices responsible for special education and rehabilitative services, postsecondary education, elementary and secondary education, and Indian education to other federal agencies that lack the staff and expertise needed to execute their missions. One of the offices protected by our bill manages programs established under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, known as IDEA, that help meet the educational needs of more than 8 million children with disabilities. Moving this work to the Department of Health and Human Services fundamentally misunderstands the purpose of the Special Education program. It is focused primarily on students’ educational needs, not their health care needs. Every American, regardless of background or disability, deserves access to a quality public education. These important landmark programs must remain at the Department of Education, where Congress specifically placed them and where they belong.

The Albanese Labor Government's introduction of new misinformation and disinformation legislation is just a renewed attack on freedom of speech in Australia. This terrible bill will be strongly opposed by One Nation Australia! Labor has never understood freedom of speech or how it works, and people always fear what they don’t understand. That’s why Labor wants to shut down freedom of speech. That’s why Labor wants to give itself the power to decide what is misinformation and disinformation, and use this power to silence honest debate and honest criticism. Labor is appalled at the very notion that Australians still have the right to say things that Labor doesn’t agree with. Labor doesn’t trust the Australian people to sort out truth from fiction for themselves. With this bill, Labor shows its contempt for the intelligence of the Australian people. Labor will use this power to silence dissent. If you speak the truth that gender ideology is contrived nonsense, or that climate change is a scam, or that COVID-19 vaccines are harmful – Labor will have the power to silence you. This bill is all the evidence this country needs to have a good, hard look at enshrining the right to free speech in the Constitution. One Nation tried to move an inquiry to kick start this process. Labor opposed it along with those other staunch opponents of free speech in Australia, the Greens. When are Australians going to wake up and understand these parties for what they are? They despise democracy and the principles which underpin its foundations. There is no democracy in Australia without freedom of speech, its most important principle. One Nation will always fight to protect true freedom of speech in our continual efforts to defend Australian democracy.
