That's a terrible example and a terrible metaphor, God is the kidnapper, he kidnapped us to his basement, earth, and he's giving us the 'choice' of loving him or eternal damnation. I believe in a loving God, but that argument for the existence of free will is just bad.

True free will is having the ability to make a decision without a threat of punishment. Separation from a deity is the threat. Better metaphor: You can choose the candy bar and you will be punched. Or, you can choose the celery without a punch.

The biggest deception and greatest damage caused was making people believe hell was a place of physical punishment, like fire or ice. Hell is the abscence of God because the one that dwells in hell chooses to reject God's love.
