Great speech today from Andy Burnham. But how could devo-max work in practice? Last year I asked Andy Burnham to spell it out in Parliament - where he trailed the idea of local control of labour market policy for the under-25s. That became part of a series of recommendations... we made. The theory is simple. The UK is running an output gap - but that varies regionally. So, we need far more devolution of labour market policy and investment to help ensure very part of Britain is firing on all cylinders. Combine that with a ‘total place’ approach to pooled regional budgets to help transform the local state. Our key advice: 1.Skills as the proving ground. Post-16 technical education should be devolved to leaders who can commission it against the real strengths of their economy. Andy Burnham has made this case for years. The evidence backs him. 2.Devolved growth needs devolved capital. We called for British Business Bank branches in every mayoral region and a real pipeline of investable propositions. A region with its own growth plan needs a visible route to the money that funds it. 3. That should be part of a rebuild of regional banking. Bring together British Business Bank and Post Office banking hubs to put small business banking on the high street. Radically expand state-backed lending guarantees. Back it up with Community Reinvestment Act to get major banks to lean in. 4.A place-based delivery spine. Mayors should sit inside the national strategy machinery, not next to it. One table, one set of numbers, national and regional leadership together. 5. Shift the capability. Mayors told us their single biggest constraint is in-house capacity. We recommended a secondment pool from the Treasury, the Department for Business and Trade and the British Business Bank, placed directly into mayoral authorities. Tomorrow Andy Burnham will become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, having blazed a singular trail to No. 10 that avoided ever having to defend, let alone stand on the Labour manifesto of the 2024 general election. Already, the total unfitness of the man for high office is beginning to be noticed, with a particularly striking online meme comparing his cringe-Dad antics to those of David Brent. Just how quickly his twee and cloying bonhomie falls apart on contact with the realities of political power we'll find out from next week. For my guest this week, Michael Murphy , Burnham is an even more dangerous figure to put in charge of the country than Sir Keir Starmer. The two represent either side of the same coin: while Starmer's dour legalism represented the underlying mechanics of the British state in all its brute force (the man was never more at home than when clamping down furiously on dissenting speech), Burnham is the smiling, matey facade that that state presents to the public; the tie-less, "call me Andy" school teacher who sits on a chair backwards to explain how he "gets it". But while Starmer included in his team some people who did recognise the priorities of the British working class, for example Morgan McSweeney, Burnham has swept to power on the back of the worst instincts of the already spectacularly inept Parliamentary Labour Party; a gang of charity-sector charlatans so clueless about the real world that they'd be more at home in a playschool. We must prepare for a very rough couple of years with this man at the helm. The world is rapidly becoming more dangerous, Britain is exposed and our enemies know it. The one possible silver lining we can take is that when Andy Burnham fails, perhaps the public will finally realise that that failure will not just be his own, but the failure of the entire Labour Party.

Do we need a Secretary of State for Wales? Andy Burnham has just named a new Sec of State for Wales. Jo Stevens the previous one has resigned and has been replaced by Stephen Kinnock. “…TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED” On Monday, It was a privilege and honor for me as I declared open the first of its series; the Workshop and Retreat which was put together for the newly appointed commissioners and top Government functionaries in Plateau State. As the adage goes ‘To whom much is given, much is expected, every one of us brings something on board and that is why this retreat is called the ‘ONBOARDING OF APPOINTEES.’ We have boarded a flight, a flight that we are hopeful will take Plateau to the Land of Glory. This is a critical time in the history of Plateau State, where the expectations of the people on Government is very high. We therefore must come together, work together, plan together, and execute the programs and policies of Government together. We have not been called to a competition, we have been called to a Collaboration, and for this collaboration to be a reality, we must bond together. It is an opportunity to make History, History for good, History to the Glory of God. I believe that I can trust the appointees to join hands with me let's rebuild Plateau and set it on a new footing to the Glory of God and for the benefit of present and future generations.

And the culmination of all this is August 24, 2026 – Independence Day of Ukraine, the 35th anniversary of its restoration. It is important that in such a year, Ukraine is giving rise to new, landmark elements of its state-building. Today, I submitted to Parliament a law on the Ukrainian National Pantheon. The names of all the heroes who, across different centuries and eras, fought for Ukraine and inspired Ukraine will be brought together and forever inscribed in our history – with a capital letter, with great respect and attention from the state. From a Ukraine that respects itself, values its people, and defends what is its own: its right to be Ukrainian. When no one, ever, will dictate how we should live, how we should speak, whom we should love, whom we should be grateful to, or which heroes we should honor. Speaking in the Steel Industry (Special Measures) Bill debate today, we should all focus on the requirement to save the jobs of those 3,500 people who have this threat hanging over them. China is pushing to shut down British steel industries, pushing forward to shut down the blast furnaces in the UK. Far too many countries like China have abused the rules of the free market, have subsidised their industries ridiculously, and have used slave labour to produce products. When that happens, the free market is dead. China now itself is suffering from an overproduction of steel. Their own housing industry has gone static on them, and they were one of the biggest users of the steel produced by China. Where is that steel going to go? It’s no surprise that a Chinese company Jingye is involved in this, because by pushing forward to shut down the blast furnaces in the UK, they know that we will have to buy slab steel from China. This is not a coincidence. This is all part of the plan. We must recognise that we will have to deal with those whom we trust and who do not break the rules. That means a whole rethink of the Government’s China policy. The previous Conservative Government should never have awarded it the contract, and I warned them about that. It is time for us to make sure that we deal with China at face value and do not accept the pretence that this company is private or in any way detached from its Government. That is a critical point. Cheap Chinese steel is a desperate problem for us, and we need to work with other countries in dealing with it. We also need to get our costs down. On Net Zero, I hope that the Secretary of State will tell the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero that we cannot go on like this. #BritishSteel

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan: I want to make it very clear that Israel’s actions in Syria should not first be presented or identified within the perspective of Turkish security concerns. It is violating the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a nation-state called Syria, and it is occupying it. It is a major national security threat for Syria, just as it is a national security threat for Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza. Therefore, I think all the Arab countries, the Muslim countries, the regional countries, the Europeans, and everybody else should come together and confront this policy.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan: I want to make it very clear that Israel’s actions in Syria should not first be presented or identified within the perspective of Turkish security concerns. It is violating the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a nation-state called Syria, and it is occupying it. It is a major national security threat for Syria, just as it is a national security threat for Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza. Therefore, I think all the Arab countries, the Muslim countries, the regional countries, the Europeans, and everybody else should come together and confront this policy.

Energy is growth. But our energy costs are some of the highest in the developed world. We have to cut the cost of power and only the Conservatives have a plan to do so. The British people are being squeezed, and our industries are being held back. This spineless Labour Government refuses to take the tough decisions needed to grow our economy. We will back British industry, level the playing field with foreign imports, and bring jobs and investment back to the UK.
