How is this greed? Cabooses were no longer needed, so they were phased out for a relatively inexpensive substitute that did the job.

The Chattanooga Choo Choo is across the street from my office. They have a few old cars you can sleep in but almost everyone switches to a real room after trying them out

I met a guy who had 2 cabooses in his back yard. He lived within 100 yards of a train track. When they phased them out he bought 2 for the scrap price. The RR delivered them to the siding in his backyard. He had to build a temporary track from the rr to his yard.

@Matt_Elliott01 In Central WA there are a number of them. A b&b features two. We almost bought one for our property. They do have dome challenges - must like the fuel oil/sweat smell. 🤣

I remember the local BN branch in my hometown, Sidney, MT, used a caboose into the mid-90's; right up until the Great Pumpkin was created.

My folks live right on the transcon here in a Cheyenne. When I was a kid in the 90's id watch all these super colorful paint jobs of now fallen flags go by and the occasional caboose. I had no idea I was watching history infront of me.

Honestly... this is the perfect post-mortem of the modern world. We traded the caboose and the human eye for a flashing plastic box named FRED. Squeeze out an extra 2% in efficiency/profit by euthanizing the aesthetics and killing the vibe. Need to be Caboosemaxxing

The caboose was an office where the conductor did the paperwork for the freight cars on the train. Such paperwork becoming computerized also meant the caboose had no use. Some are still used as a place where the brake man stands on trains that frequently reverse

they took it off for weight, then overloaded the engines anyway, run them too fast, run them at night, aaaand then you get something like the east palastine explosion.

My Great Grandfather would load fat cattle at a rail yard and ride in the caboose to the Chicago stockyards On a return trip they were not scheduled to stop so he said just slow down and he’d hop off The Engineer forgot and Grandpa tucked and rolled

Trains also had as many as 5-6 man crews back then. Railroads being railroads, their greed cut the crew down to an Engineer and Conductor. No more need for the caboose.

Up until covid times the local NS branchline actually maintained a caboose for its trains since there was a part of the trip where they had to shove the train backwards. They'd post a guy up on the rear with a radio to watch for obstructions and flag them through crossings.
