I’ll add AirBnb to the list. My wife & I were looking for AirBnb’s yesterday and when we shared a potential home to research further, we had very different pricing. I realized our VPN’s were set to different servers (countries) & I was getting ripped off because of my location.

I found this out over 30 years ago. I was in the military and I called and asked for the price of a flight, got it and hung up. Someone nearby asked if I asked for a military discount. Being new I didn't know they did that so I called back. The new price was much higher than the regular. I asked how paying more was a discount. They reply was that I could change the flight if I needed to in order to return to the military if I was called. The rub here is that back then and even today, the airlines would often try to work with someone who was dealing with an urgent situation. I now realize how disgusting it was because even if they changed your flight they still got the money so it really wasn't a favor. It was something a mega company in the US should be doing for free or little cost to them because of the opportunities the country has given them to do business.

And to be clear, the higher prices aren’t just hitting richer customers. According to the same reports, some algorithms offer lower prices to wealthy customers, since they tend to buy a lot, and have more options to do so. Poor customers with no options? You can bleed them dry.

Asked partner to order something on Amazon that I bought regularly. Price for him? $99. Price for me? Same $49 that I'd always paid. He's baffled by the cheaper prices I get. I'm baffled that he still doesn't clear all browser history on exit or strictly limit app permissions.

How can we fight this?

I have a rare ability I can add the price of each item I put into my trolley to the price of the items already in my trolley mentally. A few times the total has been different when ive checked out. Upon questioning said total ive always been proven right.

It’s not greed. It’s literally the laws of American capitalism. A company has an obligation to exploit these laws. If they don’t they’re stupid and leaving money on the table. Framing this as “greed” ignores the tireless work dems and repubs have put into these laws 🫶

So what’s the chance of a price changing by the time u get to checkout? Sale price has to match advertised. Same w/ online. Relies on shoppers not mitigating data-sharing.

The only place around me (suburban Philly) that has tried those digital price tags (so far) was Amazon Fresh, and I'm pleased to report that Bezos' supermarket failed within, like, 6 months. (The store sucked, btw. Always out of stock on advertised items, etc.) Eat shit, Jeff.

How about the stores that are saying you don’t have to stop to checkout? They just charge you when you leave via biometrics & add your “pain point” to the total, rather than calculate each item. Maybe even hitting you a little harder at times when the patronage isn’t “optimized”
