When he knows that he has to switch to the inner ‘rail’ on the staircase with his hand, it seems like he taps his hand to remind himself to then GRAB the inner rail. Boy, he is really activating those brain cells while descending.

Typically, someone walks next to an elderly person down stairs to make sure they are steady, but I’m certain his ego would not allow that, knowing it would look like he was weak. That refusal of help may prove to be a bad choice ultimately.
