Greg Abbott has awakened a bipartisan, pro-public education movement. The same day he signed his billionaire voucher scam into law, Texans rejected anti-public education extremists in school board races across the state. Even in defeat, I see hope. A new movement is beginning.

A group of billionaires—Jeff Yass, Tim Dunn, Farris Wilks, Betsy DeVos—are on a mission to dismantle public education in Texas. Their strategy is simple: 1) discredit our public schools, then 2) defund our public schools.

For years, these billionaires have executed a smear campaign against our schools. They’ve paid politicians to call our librarians groomers and accuse teachers of indoctrination, with the ultimate goal of privatizing our schools with a voucher scam.

Last Saturday, they finally achieved their goal when Greg Abbott signed a voucher bill into law that will defund our neighborhood schools. But as Abbott was clinking glasses with his billionaire mega-donors in the Governor’s mansion, something else was happening that same day…

On Saturday, voters across the state headed to the polls to elect their local school boards. Anti-public education groups like Moms for Liberty and Patriot Mobile — backed by the same billionaires — spent Big Money to try and buy those seats.

Extremist school board candidates ran on culture wars: banning books, bullying students, and bashing teachers. But they lost. From Fort Bend to Fort Worth, pro-public education candidates won on a platform of supporting students and respecting teachers.

The billionaires got their voucher bill. But even in this defeat, I see glimmers of hope. I see parents and teachers, Republicans and Democrats, rural, urban, and suburban Texans coming together to fight for our students.

I see the seeds of a new movement that’s not left vs right, but top vs bottom. A movement that brings Texans together across partisan divides to take on Big Money and Big Lies. Greg Abbott may have the money, but we have the majority.

Our bipartisan movement is just getting started. If they want to come for our Texas public schools, we have four words for them: Come and take it.
