The first footage of wolves eating raspberries to our knowledge! We captured this footage last summer when the Bug Creek Pack pups spent a good while foraging for berries in this patch. Of course, we have known for a while wolves eat raspberries as we have sifted through many scats full of raspberry seeds. However, we’ve never observed the behavior before. Just a few months ago, before we were aware we captured this footage, we actually published a scientific paper on the “berry-eating” behavior of wolves. The big takeaway from our study (link to study below!): based on our data, wolves foraging on berries in our area is an extremely widespread behavior and one that almost every wolf we have studied engages in when berries are abundant. We have captured trail camera footage of wolves of all ages, sexes, and social statuses (i.e., breeding or subordinate wolf) from several packs foraging on berries. All of this indicates “berry-eating” by wolves is likely pervasive across large portions of southern boreal ecosystems in places like Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. However, given the lack of summer research on the foraging ecology of wolves in these areas, we think this behavior has just gone unnoticed. Although, there is evidence based on scats collected in these areas that wolves are foraging on berries. Now, it is important to understand why wolves eat berries and to not misconstrue this finding with the notion that wolves eat berries because they prefer berries over animal prey. Wolves do not have digestive systems that are meant to digest plant matter and berries effectively. Thus, berries are almost certainly "starvation food" for wolves; as in, the wolves are starving and berries are the best option given the circumstances to stave off hunger and slow weight loss. All this to say, wolves are not eating berries instead of other animals because they prefer berries over meat. We have no doubt that if a wolf had an option between a meal of berries or of deer/ beaver that it would choose the latter every single time. Catching deer and beavers, wolves primary summer prey, is extremely challenging for wolves in late summer, and likely requires extensive energy expenditure. Thus, instead of spending substantial energy hunting prey they likely cannot catch, wolves turn to berries, which are abundant, taste good, and likely make them feel full. Some incredible footage of two wolves killing a beaver this April in Estonia. Now, you might be wondering: why on earth are we sharing a video captured more than 4,000 miles away on a different continent? The reason is to illustrate that beavers are important prey for wolves in a variety of ecosystems across the Northern Hemisphere. When we share our research on wolf-beaver interactions, folks sometimes think wolves hunting beavers is a unique quirk of the wolves in our area, not something that happens in many other areas. But the reality is, across large expanses of North America and Europe, beavers are important prey. For instance, studies have found that beavers constituted a substantial portion of the diets of wolves in many areas including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Northwest Territories, Alberta, Manitoba, British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, and Alaska. Obviously, the extent to which wolves rely on hunting and killing beavers likely depends on many factors such as the size of beaver populations and other prey populations. However, the lack of research on the topic leaves the question unanswered. Indeed, the relationship between wolves and beavers has received very little attention because it is a difficult relationship to study, and because most wolf-prey studies focus on how wolves hunt, kill, and impact socially-important ungulate species like moose, deer, elk, and caribou. For more than a decade, a large focus of our research has been to understand the complex and fascinating relationship between wolves and beavers. Such work is without a doubt the most intensive research ever undertaken on this predator-prey relationship. Although our work has provided many insights, we have many questions to answer still, some that will take many more years to answer. The answers to these questions are not just relevant to our small little corner of Minnesota, but to a large swath of the northern hemisphere where wolves hunt and kill beavers routinely. We put a camera here over a year ago, unsure if it would be a good spot. Always lots of trial and error with cameras when trying to find good spots where wolves like to travel. But, it was a beautiful setting in some conifers along a small creek and we figured wolves would likely would travel through this more open terrain along the creek. Turns out, this was a pretty good spot. And it wasn’t just wolves that used this scenic stretch of forest as you can see. In total, we have captured more than 1,500 videos of wildlife on this camera in the past year or so (8.3 hours of footage). Most videos are of snowshoe hares and deer but wolves (the Half-Moon Pack) cruise through the area periodically as do most of the other forest predators. This 3 minute video is just a highlight reel of some of the most interesting footage. Big thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resource Trust Fund for their continued support of our work. That support allows us to share this footage and our findings with millions of people each year!

"how does it feel to be one of the most loved f1 drivers by the fans?" lando: "fans are the best part of our sport. our sport doesn't happen without the fans' support. they're the people who make it so exciting and worthwhile. we have to appreciate the fans, and i always have to say a big thank you to all of the people who support me every weekend because it's so much more fun. when they are there, when they're having a good time, when they're celebrating. my fans are the best. of course, they grow every year and i have more and more and i love them all. they make my life so exciting. they make my years something to look forward to. and i look forward to many, many more years of celebrating with them and trying to win more championships and races for them."

Even though wolves in our area are fairly small relative to wolves in other areas (wolves in our area average ~62-63 lbs), they are still considerably larger than coyotes when you compare the two. Here is a video we made a few years back showing the size difference between the two. Clearly, even smaller wolves are much larger than coyotes in our area. The coyotes in this video are typical of what coyotes look like in our area–which is why the video of that mysterious sort-of-coyote-looking- but-not-entirely-coyote-looking canine we shared yesterday caught our attention. I.e., that canine just doesn’t look like any other coyote we have observed in our area. But who knows what it actually is! Lastly, we dedicate this video to all the humble ‘experts’ who, often with such nice and kind words, tell us the wolves we are studying are actually coyotes! You always give us a good chuckle ;)!

Anthony Edwards on championship habits... “We’ve just got to listen to the coaches. We had a hard time with like processing stuff and going out there and doing it, trying to do stuff on our own. I think that’s our problem... I feel like you’re supposed to build championship habits in the regular season."

Spiritual and physical maladies thrive on one another; they feed on one another. Our overall wellness must begin with a spiritual question: how do we relate to ourselves, to each other, to our communities, and to the planet?” “Vested interests and malignant political actors profit and flourish when we are atomized and fragmented and uncertain, when we can be easily propagandized, when we live in fear and helplessness and victimization. These forces prefer to have us in terror and anxiety, which disable our capacity for critical thinking and make us more compliant and more credulous. They want us hiding from ourselves, to avoid our own shadows, and dulling our pain and loneliness through sedation and distraction. Yet inside of us, we know that love and self-knowledge are the only true paths to good health. Here at HHS, we need to take on the task of guiding our country and the world to question, towards skepticism, towards engagement, to discover our own paths to living our fullest lives, unleashing the potential in every one of us to make good personal choices that allow us to nourish, to heal, and to develop ourselves. I went to Mexico to learn and to see a world unfiltered by press or the opinions of another. The suffering of our fellow humans should never be hidden from our site. We need to rebuild our nation and our world on foundations of stone - kindness, thoughtfulness, intelligent choices. Not the foundations of sand - fear, hate, and division. We must work to lift others out of despair and anger and I can say with all confidence, when their lives are better, our lives are better

Judge Joe Browm made the realest statement about a lot Black people in America, we have all been fooled. We are in the age of knowing, it’s time for us to act like we know and go back to our roots. We are aware that our culture has been influenced by the same people that want us to destroy each other. It took 58 years and 11 months to turn us on our own. What goes up must come down and when your culture is built on propaganda and lies it will eventually fall and evolve.
