I bet this is mostly capacity optimization at OpenAI. Because they're operating at 100x+ the scale, they're likely aiming for maximum hardware utilization and trading off some latency for efficiency.

Try LeChat by mistral. Its 1100 tokens per second. Much faster than even grok.

Speed definitely matters. It's basically the only reason I sometimes use mistral now which is effectively instant.
