Did you know you can grow new tomato plants from its suckers? This is a great way to have infinite tomato plants from just one plant! Here is how you do it: 1. Identify Suckers: Look for small shoots emerging from the leaf axils (the angle between the stem and a leaf). They’re typically 2–4 inches long when ideal for propagation. 2. Remove Suckers: Use clean, sharp scissors or pruners to cut the sucker from the plant. Choose healthy, vigorous ones for best results. 3. Prepare for Rooting: - Remove the lower leaves, leaving only the top 2–4 leaves. - Optionally, dip the cut end in rooting hormone to encourage faster root growth (not mandatory). 4. Root in Water or Soil: - Water: Place the sucker in a jar of water, submerging the cut end. Keep it in a bright, indirect light area and change the water every few days. This slake test shows the difference in soil structure between 10 years of tillage (on the left) and 10 years of pasture (on the right). When dropped into water, the chunk of tilled soil quickly breaks apart as water is drawn into unstable pores. On the other hand, the pasture soil has stable aggregates and macropores that maintain their form in the presence of water. Stable soil aggregates and macropores are formed when soil has the right ratio of cations to allow for flocculation, enough biological activity to stick soil particles together with microbial and root exudates, and sufficient organic matter to drive the cycle. While some tilled soils will have the right chemistry to form a healthy structure, routine tillage simply doesn't allow for the biological activity required to maintain the structure. Fill the 5 gallon jug and decant the water into the 3 gallon jug. This leaves two gallons in the big jug. 2. Batch cooking your own sauce and freezing some will keep you from buying overpriced jars of sauce at the store when you’re in a pinch. This is about 10 pounds of canned San Marzano tomatoes with some onion, carrot, celery and garlic (I had to use elephant garlic since all the garlic at my store was gross). Start with extra virgin olive oil in a pot and cook down your mirepoix for 3-5 minutes. Add in your garlic and cook another couple minutes. Add in tomato paste (I used a 4oz tube). Cook another 3 minutes. Add in your tomatoes, fresh basil, fresh oregano, parmigiano reggiano rinds (the end of the cheese block, it becomes soft and adds umami to the sauce) salt and pepper. Simmer this for 3-8 hours (longer you go the more concentrated the flavor and the sauce will reduce some). If you have a blender or food processor, blend up all of the sauce into a purée. This isn’t necessary, but it will be a better texture if you do this. Add in some extra virgin olive oil and more salt and pepper if you need it. Transfer to freezer safe containers and store.

This video was taken in eastern Colorado just 30 minutes after a 1" rain. Notice the ponding and erosion already starting in this recently planted field. This is a symptom of soils that lack biology, and have poor aggregation and structure. They can't absorb water, so the rain runs off instead of soaking in. Without living roots and good soil structure, bare ground struggles to infiltrate rainfall, especially intense storms like this one appears to have been. Healthy soils act like sponges. Here's how we can capture more rain and prevent erosion: - Keep living roots in the ground as much as possible with cover crops - Minimize tillage to preserve soil structure - Build organic matter through residue and compost - & so much more!
