In Nov after the death of Monica, the mother of two of Kibalama’s kids(twins) I posted that two Good Samaritans had offered to help with the twins’ fees. Here is the update; the first offer was dependent on the guardian’s willingness to switch the child to the offerer’s school. The school is in Kampala. When I finally met the guardians earlier this month they said they can’t separate the children. When I suggested that both children can be taken to this school where the owner will be paying for one of them the guardians said the children’s mother wanted the school they are in. The second offer, the Samaritan sent me 500k last week as the contribution he can afford because of many other financial obligations and the tough economy. The kids’ fees is 1,470,000 each.

Monday morning update: the EA crew last night removed the barrels of oil from the river & installed a boom, which is good. However, the boom appears to be less effective at holding back oil than my home made one, with the current seemingly just pushing the oil underneath & out onto the Roding. Most importantly, I have no idea if the EA have, or intend to, tracked the spill upstream to find the source. And I have no direct way of contacting anyone to find out. So I don’t know if it’s in hand, or if I need to take time off work to do it myself. This shows yet again the need for cooperation & liaising between the EA & local river guardians.

VIDEO: Update from UI International School Hijab Saga Muslim female students of the International School, University of Ibadan (ISI), who voluntarily wear the hijab in line with their religious beliefs, were allowed into the school premises on Monday, July 6, despite Friday's Court of Appeal judgment overturning the earlier High Court decision that permitted the use of the hijab at the school. The students arrived at the school accompanied by their parents and guardians. There was an initial attempt by security personnel to prevent them from entering, but they were eventually granted access while wearing their hijabs. Some of the students, who appeared apprehensive during the encounter at the school gate, briefly removed their hijabs before putting them back on and proceeding into the school. Friday's judgment by the Court of Appeal, sitting in Ibadan, set aside the Oyo State High Court's ruling that had declared the school's prohibition of the hijab unconstitutional. In a split decision of two to one, the appellate court held that the Supreme Court's decision permitting the use of the hijab applies only to public schools and not to private institutions such as the International School, University of Ibadan. The ruling has since attracted mixed reactions. While the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has announced plans to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court, the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has also backed the move and called for stronger protection of the religious rights of Muslim students.
