This is why I like PlayStation so much, their studios design custom engines and really maximizes them! And you can tell the dedication to detail is remarkable in all their games.

I want all the anti-exclusives and "all games should be multi-platform" folk to watch, listen and ponder WHY Digital Foundry said this. Is John anti-consumer? Or could it be he's PRO consumer, but intelligent and knowledgeable enough to understand the tech/design benefits of exclusivity? "It's refreshing to see a title that not only launches exclusively on a single platform, but also raises the bar visually." Again, there's a reason an exclusive whether timed or otherwise, has won a whopping 35/46 or 76% of the best tech/graphics awards over just under a decade, from 5 of the most notable institutions giving out such awards. And this despite exclusives making up less than 10% of overall releases. Exclusivity increases (but certainly doesn't guarantee) the chances of quality, both in game design, technology and graphics, due to the extra design and optimisation leeway afforded by ground up single platform focus, dual for Xbox. And Digital Foundry being tech experts, of course understand this. God, just look at that view! 😍 I really don’t understand the extreme hate this game gets. #HorizonForbiddenWest Just because I’m pointing out the beautiful art direction and open-world design, and saying it’s one of the best-looking games this generation, doesn’t mean there is no gameplay there. My page shows all sorts, from the smallest environmental details to actual gameplay moments, and personally, I love the story and gameplay too. But story is subjective. Combat feel is subjective. Not every game is going to land the same for every player. The hate this game gets in the comments is so forced, man. I’m not talking about actual criticism. Fair criticism is fine. I’m talking about the toxic BS where people act like the game has zero value just because it isn’t for them. If you don’t like it, fair play. Move on. But trying to drag everyone else for enjoying it is just dumb. And IMO what isn’t really up for debate, though, is the effort poured into this world. The density, lighting, environments, machine design, animation work, sound, ambience, and overall presentation are genuinely top-tier. As a piece of game art, it’s a masterpiece. Simple as that. That’s what draws me in. And for the people saying graphics mean nothing, I just don’t agree. Yes, a game can look rough and still be incredible. Gameplay will always matter. But visuals, art direction, lighting, atmosphere, and world detail absolutely can pull you deeper into a game. They add emotion, immersion, and a stronger sense of place. For some games, graphics are not just “pretty visuals”, they are part of the experience. It’s games like this that make me want to see what more studios could do with PlayStation’s in-house Decima engine. Honestly, if Decima was public, it would be a serious rival to Unreal Engine 5’s position in the market.

It's PS5 RDNA 1.5 all over again, and reading responses, like a certain fandom never gets tired of being let down or uninformed. There's reasons PS5 often outperforms Xbox Series X despite the latter having 44% more compute than PS5 and being "full RDNA 2", which Digital Foundry did a video on. As I said at the start of the gen, most RDNA2 features Xbox/PC fans claim PS5 is missing, it was unlikely to use as they're Microsoft DirectX RDNA tie in features, and PS5 doesn't use DX but instead its own proprietary custom API called AGC. Why would PlayStation push for Microsoft DirectX RDNA features, when they don't use DirectX? Any AGC API specific graphics features PS5 uses (that Xbox wouldn't have) are not widely publicly advertised, as PlayStation don't need to advertise them the way Microsoft does due to their PC DirectX market. Thus every customisation PS5 has (which Kepler seemingly glosses over or doesn't recognise), from its faster clockspeeds, cache scrubbers, I/O set up, CPU alleviating decompression, DMA controllers and processors, geometry engine etc, will have been specifically designed around AGC or vice versa, NOT DirectX RDNA2 features. PS6 will be no different. There may be DirectX RDNA5 features they do not need or use, but there will inevitably be other unique customisations of their own and for their OWN proprietary API instead, no doubt bolstered by Amethyst custom features from their partnership with AMD. If history is any indicator, PlayStation is right to prioritise their own API and modifications, as these tend to have greater cost to perfomance results for the hardware vs the competition. The RDNA2 DirectX image below is taken directly from AMD's website, and again, PlayStation doesn't use Microsoft's DirectX. #PS6

QSSR is yet more proof engineering can trump tflops and marketing soundbites. Digital Foundry describes #PS5's new QSSR upscaler as "potentially a game changer" with "remarkable" implications. They say its improvements are "transformative" and "differences can be quite profound". In Marvel’s Wolverine they say "the detail level generally seems to be significantly improved" and also "delivering significantly better presentation of RT reflections". QSSR also cleans up a whole host of shimmering, pixel crawl, ghosting and other issues, and is generally far more temporally stable. They say while PSSR "might not be enormously different from a quality perspective" to QSSR, the PS5 Pro is still "justified" and in comparison "looks absolutely pristine in a way that neither of the base PS5 versions are", due to "more advanced upscaling, running from higher base resolutions and a higher output resolution" and "improved Ray Tracing and such". They discuss how based on Ghost of Yotei, there is a chance QSSR actually has a similar perfomance cost to FSR, and if so, "looks too good to be true", with QSSR offering significantly better image quality at potentially no additional performance cost. They say PlayStation has told them swapping out FSR for QSSR is a relatively painless process. While they don't yet know if GTA 6 will ship with QSSR, image quality was one of the issues they had with the game, and that if it QSSR does go to GTA 6 "it would be a bit of a game changer for the console. It would be pretty extraordinary." They end with "you've got to hand it to Sony for doing something that I just didn't think would be possible, but they've done it, and it works." The PS5 has ultimately created a potentially bigger gap to the Series X and similarly perfomant older (non FSR4) AMD GPU systems. At least in image quality and stability, for now. Local TV weather is one of the last places on television where real-time science still meets personality in real time. This FOX 10 segment shows a meteorologist walking viewers through a major heat event across the South and Southwest. The graphics are standard — temperature gradients, pressure patterns, the usual regional outlook — but the delivery is what makes local weather stick. Clear gestures, steady pacing, and the ability to make dense information feel immediate. Clips like this travel for a reason that goes beyond the obvious. Extreme heat is not abstract right now. Large stretches of the country are dealing with prolonged triple-digit temperatures, elevated heat-index values, and the health and infrastructure stress that comes with them. When a station packages that information with a polished, confident presentation, people actually stop and watch the forecast instead of scrolling past another generic alert. There’s also a longer cultural note here. Weather has always been one of the few remaining appointment-viewing formats that still feels local and useful. The same segment that gives you the numbers also carries the visual language of the station — wardrobe, lighting, energy. That combination is why these moments keep circulating: the information is practical, and the packaging is memorable. The forecast itself is the substance. Everything else is just how it gets delivered. Credit: @yournewsndweatherbabe What’s your local station doing with the heat right now — straight numbers, or are they leaning into the presentation side too?

Today, we’re excited to announce our $50M Series B, led by Greenfield Partners, with participation from Lightspeed and Notable Capital. 🚀 At Patronus AI, we develop simulations and evals to train and improve AI. The first phase of AI was built on static benchmarks, but that era is over. As agents are used to solve longer and longer tasks, they need to practice in dynamic, living worlds to get better. Simulations are the critical infrastructure powering this next phase. As a company, we’re behind the most influential research and products in AI evaluation, like FinanceBench, Lynx, and Percival. And things have moved at the speed of light since.⚡ We partner with the world's leading frontier AI labs and enterprises, and our revenue has grown more than 15x over the past year. Additionally, today, we’re introducing a preview of the first Digital World Model for AI agent training and simulation: Patronus-DWM. Digital World Models are language diffusion world models that predict realistic environment behaviors and steer agent actions across digital workflows. Just as physical world models predict how objects move through space, we’re developing the equivalent for the digital world: predicting how agents act in digital workflows, then using that to scale the creation of high-quality training data for LLMs. Digital World Models help us push the frontier of ultra long horizon workflows, and unlock a new class of self-improving RL environments. This is our scalable approach to simulating all of the world’s intelligence. The round was also joined by Datadog, Inc., Samsung Ventures, Gokul Rajaram, Factorial Capital, and a large cohort of amazing AI leaders across Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, NVIDIA, Recursive, and more.✨ It has been the ride of a lifetime. But we’re just getting started. The best is yet to come. "Do not go gentle into that good night, Rage, rage against the dying of the light" - Dylan Thomas (1954)

Digital Foundry posts their Top 10 Best Graphics of the Year list, and it's the first time I've ever strongly disagreed with the top pick. Doom The Dark Ages for me has no business being #1 this year. It's polished, well optimised and solid looking, but seldom truly standout. I think we're getting to a point where well optimised on PC titles may be getting extra leeway, and technical "checklist" features like different types of Ray Tracing and Path Tracing, are taking precedence over overall graphics impact and other visual achievements. Many games that include RT features, can be less potent or dynamic in other areas, and Doom is no different. Death Stranding 2 may not have RT, but it has other state of the art aspects (some of which DF touched on), such as mind blowing environmental dynamism, including; +Mass engulfing forest fires. +City sized violent desert storms, masking all visibility and caking you and objects around you in thick sand. +Snow storms doing the same. +Extreme rain storms causing interactable physics based flash floods, rivers, rapids and lakes in areas completely dry and barren prior. +Avalanches. +Extreme weather impacted volumetric clouds and fog permeating everything around you. Including the ability to be atop them on mountains, and even traverse through them. +Black tar that will cover everything as far as the eye can see. +Segments where enrire areas are underwater with all the caustics, changes in physics etc. +Segments where hundreds of thousands of particles will bloom and bounce all around. +Etc. It also did this while having arguably more impactul overall assets, geometric complexity, shaders, materials, visual realism, scope, scale, atmospheric and other effects, attention to detail, far superior character models etc, while being FULLY open world. Hell, it even has giant Kaiju type battles where multiple foes the size of apartment blocks can battle it out (Doom has similar, but in closed off seperate segments, and sans the entire environment changing dynamically on the fly). In that regard, Death Stranding 2 for me graphically had infinitely more jaw on the floor and how is this even possible type moments, feeling like a true next-gen graphical showcase, pretty much from start to finish. I'd argue it's potentially the best looking current-gen game to date. To that end, you show a thousand gamers the best looking scenes from Death Stranding 2 and Doom The Dark Ages, I'm almost certain the overwhelming majority would say Death Stranding 2 is the far more graphically impressive game, and they'd be right to. Assassin's Creed Shadows was #2. It's graphically stellar and imo more deserving of #1 than Doom, though despite having excellent RT, physics, scale, draw distance etc, it has a few drawbacks that have a negative impact to its overall visual cohesion, especially in things like character models and some of their facial animations, which were important and emphasised parts of the game owing to how cinematic/story driven it is. Also a little surprised Kingdom Come Deliverance II and Battlefield 6 aren't there, especially in place of something like Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, inspite of Switch hardware limitations. Here's the full list. 1. Doom: The Dark Ages 2. AC Shadows 3. Death Stranding 2 • Dying Light: The Beast • Ghost of Yotei • Metroid Prime 4 Beyond • Mafia: The Old Country • Silent Hill F • Earthion • Routine Video montage of some of #DeathStranding2's environmental and weather effects included. #PS5 #PS5Pro Full Digital Foundry video .
