I started with the original SimCity in 1989, then SimCity 2000 in 1993, and ended my journey with SimCity 3000, released in 1999 by Maxis and EA, which - to me - is the pinnacle of city-building simulations. Players zone residential, commercial, and industrial areas on gigantic isometric maps, managing budgets, traffic, pollution, and waste - a new mechanic that was absent in SimCity 2000. You negotiate deals with neighboring cities for water or power, erect iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, and unleash disasters from earthquakes to locust plagues. Its jazzy soundtrack and advisor system add charm, and not only make it a fun but also an educational game. I loved SimCity and SimCity 2000, but the champion for me is the 3000 version, hands down. Still a great game today!

MicroProse was - in my eyes - the king of simulations in the 1980s and 1990s, especially in the historical/war strategy genre. Their games were of the highest quality, offering incredible depth and historical authenticity (within the limitations of the era, of course). All of them came with massive manuals - and boy, were they needed! The quality and depth of the games came at a price: Your willingness to dig deep and learn/study, you couldn't just jump in and "wing it". Red Storm Rising (1988) had a notably steep learning curve for its time. It was one of the more complex naval simulations of the late 1980s, featuring realistic submarine warfare (sonar, torpedoes, missiles, evasion tactics, and more) in a Cold War campaign based on Tom Clancy's novel (which I never read). Realism played a major role: at higher difficulties, the game punished mistakes harshly. Poor sonar use or a noisy maneuver could get you sunk faster than you could say "oh crap". Even basic play required a solid understanding of submarine tactics. In many ways, Red Storm Rising felt like the big brother of Silent Service - bigger, meaner, stronger, and much harder to master.

It has that perfect balance: simply gorgeous to look at, deeply satisfying/addictive to play, challenging but never brutally punishing, and surprisingly complex for its era. And the music... wonderful! But most of all, it possesses that truly rare quality: endless replayability. You always find yourself saying “just one more thing”: one more industrial zone, one more power plant, one more police station to keep the crime rate at a semi-reasonable rate… and then, with a bit of spare cash, you decide your city needs a beautiful park! Before you know it, another hour has vanished. Some games feel truly timeless, and SimCity 2000 is one of them. Designed by Will Wright (who later created The Sims and the ambitious Spore), it stands as a high point of 90s game design. Ranking as the 9th best-selling game of the entire decade is mindblowing when you consider the sheer quality of titles released between 1990 and 2000. While it may not have delivered the same groundbreaking “wow” moment as the original SimCity, as a sequel it was a gigantic leap forward in every way. For a game that's now well over 3 decades old, it could easily be published today and still be a huge success.

According to an interview with Samuel L. Jackson, he and writer and director John Singleton often argued over the direction of the film. After one particular argument, Singleton refused to come out of his trailer. Christian Bale didn't have any interest in playing the part of the villain, as he had just finished making American Psycho (2000). But he was reading through lines with Toni Collette, who has the part of the witness in the film, one day, and decided to give it a go as another villain after all. 🎬 SHAFT (2000)

Hard to believe it's been 26 years since its release. My love for Westwood Studios started with Dune 2, so naturally when the original Command & Conquer was released, I had to get my hands on it. And so it began, the journey through all the sequels. Red Alert 2 was is simply bigger and better than it's predecessors (which were already great), had some iconic cutscenes, great acting (well, for a game) and of course Agent Tanya! A single player campain (Allied or Soviet) and a multiplayer option (LAN or online) - for 2000 this game had everything. I miss Westwood...
