Today, our team commenced the demolition of illegal shanties erected along the median at Alaba Rago Market. These structures built by those who turned public infrastructure into personal property; featured mattresses, deep freezers, and were being used to sell sachet water and drinks - This is not only a defacement of public space but a direct violation of Lagos State’s environmental and planning laws. Medians are not markets or residences. They are part of our urban infrastructure and must be protected for safety, aesthetics, and order. We will continue this clean-up exercise across the state. Today, we joined the city’s Outdoor Advertising Compliance Ambassadors who will be responsible for monitoring and removing illegal advertising across the city in coordination with the Tshwane Metro Police Department. There are rules that must be followed for outdoor advertising approval. It is against municipal law to erect signs without approval. When enforcement officers take action, some traders resort to theatrics to portray themselves as victims. Others have gone as far as hiring persons with disabilities and using children, knowing that enforcement actions against them are more challenging. Let it be clear order must be upheld, and enforcement will apply to everyone, without exception. The law is clear: hawkers are not allowed to operate on main corridors, obstructing pedestrian walkways. Designated backstreets are available, and trading is only permitted from 4 PM to 10 PM. The trending video showing our officers rescuing a child after the mother fled is just another example of the tactics used to manipulate public sentiment and justify illegal operations in the CBD. Our commitment remains firm ensuring a clean, organized, and law-abiding city. The properties are non-compliant and were built without approval, with illegal connections to both water and electricity. Today, our LAWMA Project WISE team joined Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the Nigeria Police and OP MESA military personnel in a coordinated enforcement operation across the Ketu–Mile 12 corridor, including Ketu Bus Stop and Ile Ile. The operation focused on clearing illegal trading activities from walkways, road setbacks and other unauthorised spaces that had obstructed pedestrian movement and contributed to poor environmental conditions in the area. Beyond clearing the affected locations, the more important task is preventing a return to the same conditions. Our teams are therefore maintaining a presence in the corridor to discourage immediate reoccupation and ensure that the gains from the exercise are sustained. Lagos is a densely populated city where public space is under constant pressure. Keeping our roads, walkways and public spaces clean and accessible requires consistent enforcement, but it also requires cooperation from traders, residents and businesses. We have begun clearing the illegal shanties and market stalls built along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. As we rebuild the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into a modern 10-lane highway, we cannot allow its median to become a market, a settlement or a site for illegal structures. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to trade, build makeshift shops or live on the median of a major highway. It is unsafe, illegal and unacceptable. We often compare Lagos with some of the world’s leading cities and ask why we cannot be like them. The truth is that those cities work because people respect public infrastructure and obey the rules. We cannot expect a world-class city while refusing to show the discipline needed to keep one. Dumping waste indiscriminately or building illegal structures along our highways will not move us forward. If we want a cleaner, safer and more organised Lagos, discipline and personal responsibility must become part of our everyday culture. That is how we build a city we can all be proud of.

Following credible reports that hoodlums had taken over the Orile Under Bridge and were extorting money from cart pushers who dump refuse illegally in the area, the Environmental Task Force carried out a raid at about 2:45pm today. During the operation, 26 suspects were arrested. Some of them admitted to collecting money from cart pushers in exchange for allowing indiscriminate dumping of waste. They have been taken into custody for further investigation and necessary action in line with the law. In a separate operation earlier today at about 8:00am, Agency operatives continued the ongoing clean-up exercise along the Coastal Road. Hoodlums had converted the road setback into makeshift dwellings, erecting several wooden sheds and occupying the corridor unlawfully. Today, we asked the City of Bozeman to proclaim October 14, 2025 as “Debate Is Not Hate Day.” At a time when our community is divided over housing, land use, infrastructure, and symbolic decisions such as adopting the “pride” flag as an official city flag, and in the wake of national events that have deepened polarization, we believe it is critical for the City to reaffirm that every voice is welcome and that disagreement should never lead to violence. We are also asking Mayor Cunningham to make a clear statement condemning the political violence we witnessed this week, just as he did following the murder of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman earlier this year, to show that Bozeman will not tolerate violence as a response to differing viewpoints. This proclamation, paired with a strong public statement, would send a clear message: Bozeman and its leadership stand for respectful dialogue, hearing and considering all perspectives in good faith, and leaving personal politics aside to build a future that reflects the whole community. We have requested that the proclamation be read at the October 7th City Commission meeting since there will not be a meeting on October 14th following Columbus Day. Earlier today, I led an extensive inspection tour of critical drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation projects across Lekki, Agungi, Ikota and Ajiran, and what we uncovered demands immediate and decisive action. The persistent flooding in Agungi despite the completion of major drainage infrastructure over two years ago has a clear cause. At Ajiran, we discovered that a land owning family deliberately blocked the outfall channel that was specifically designed to discharge stormwater by gravity into the Lagos Lagoon. I have directed that the outlet be reopened immediately in the overriding public interest. Let me state clearly: no individual or family has the right to obstruct natural watercourses or public drainage infrastructure regardless of their land titles. We are not taking anyone's land. We are simply restoring the channel to allow water to flow freely and protect thousands of residents from avoidable flooding. At Megamond Estate in Ikota, we found that developers had illegally reclaimed part of the Ikota River and commenced construction without obtaining the necessary environmental and drainage approvals. Enforcement and abatement notices had been served previously but were ignored. From tomorrow morning, all illegal structures erected on reclaimed drainage alignments without approval in that estate will be removed. This action sends a clear message that Lagos will not tolerate encroachment on drainage channels or public infrastructure. I also reiterate that any development involving wetlands or water related projects must obtain an Environmental Impact Assessment and Wetland Clearance from the Ministry before any reclamation or construction begins. We do not care whose ox is gored. It is unfair to law abiding residents and unacceptable because it compromises public safety. I urge every Lagosian to remain vigilant. The illegal activities we uncovered today came to our attention through whistleblowers. We investigated, verified, and acted. See something, say something - constructively. We are fully committed to a #CleanerLagos and a #GreaterLagos.

This October 17th, you will have your voice heard. Vancouverites will have the chance to bring lasting change to how we address open-air hard drug use in our public spaces and increase treatment capacity for those dealing with severe mental health and addiction challenges.
