📢📢Context/Details 📢📢 Ashley Revell, a daring gambler, became the center of attention with his audacious bet in 2004. Revell, from England, decided to risk everything he owned on a single spin of the roulette wheel in Las Vegas. Selling all his possessions, including his car, clothes, and even a watch, he raised an impressive sum of $135,300. With the amassed cash, Revell headed to the Plaza Hotel & Casino, where he placed the entire amount on red during a televised event. The intense moment drew a crowd as the roulette wheel spun, determining Revell's fate. Fortunately for him, the ball landed on Red 7, securing his victory. Revell doubled his money in an instant, leaving the casino with $270,600. His bold gamble not only brought financial success but also garnered widespread media attention, turning him into a symbol of high-stakes risk-taking in the world of gambling. When this is discussed people always talk about it as being roughly a 50% chance of doubling and a 50% chance of losing everything (yes, I am ignoring 0 for simplicity). But that entirely ignores taxes. If you lose, you lose everything, but if you win you don't double, you gain approximately 40% more money *after* tax. So you're gambling roughly 50/50 with the outcome being -100% or +40%. Seems a lot less tempting when you view it through that lens. And that ignores that the odds aren't 50/50, the house has an edge due to 0.
