Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World has become one of Hollywood’s most consequential films - at least in the last decade or so. I think this had the potential to be an all-time great Ridley film but, as we all know, it was totally derailed by issues related to Kevin Spacey. Ridley shot the entire film with Spacey & early reports were that Spacey delivered an Oscar-caliber performance. In other words, Spacey was the film’s heartbeat. In the wake of news breaking around horrendous allegations against Spacey, Ridley was forced to pivot with nearly no time. That led Ridley to one of my favorite actors in the history of mankind…Christopher Plummer. One door closes & another opens. Plummer, at 88, became the oldest actor ever nominated for an Oscar. All of which is to say that Plummer stepped into this film with as much grace as anyone in the situation could possibly manage - and to do it at nearly 90? Plummer must’ve thought he had seen it all, at least until this point. But while Plummer earned an Oscar nomination, this film suffered from the reshoots & recasting. It’s a tall task for any film to reshoot like this film had to but Ridley tried taking it all in stride. On the eve of a new Ridley Scott film, it’s worth revisiting one of the more interesting chapters in his career.
