A postgraduate medical student from GSL Medical College is undergoing treatment on ventilator support in Hyderabad after a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated man rammed into a scooter outside Prasaditya Mall on AV Apparao Road in Rajahmundry. The incident occurred on August 3, and a video purportedly showing the crash surfaced on social media on August 6. According to Prakash Nagar police, two men, identified as S. Dasvanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards, had allegedly arrived at the mall's Saradhi Cinemas in an intoxicated state. Police said security personnel stopped them from entering after a breathalyser test reportedly confirmed alcohol consumption, following which the duo allegedly assaulted security staff before leaving for the parking area. Around the same time, GSL Medical College students Sai Umesh, a Radiology postgraduate, and Priyanka, a Dermatology postgraduate, were leaving the mall on a scooter. Police said Dasvanth, who was driving a Tata Nexon car, allegedly hit the scooter from behind twice in a rash and negligent manner. When the riders were on the main road outside the mall gate, the car allegedly struck the scooter again, causing both students to fall. The injured students were rushed to Swatantra Hospital in Rajahmundry by a passerby. While Umesh suffered a concussion, Priyanka sustained serious injuries, including a skull fracture and brain injury, and was later shifted to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, where she remains on ventilator support. Earlier reports claimed that the car ran over Priyanka after the collision. However, Prakash Nagar Police Station officials said this was not accurate and that the investigation was based on available evidence. Police said two FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident. A case based on Umesh's statement has been filed against Dasvanth and Edwards under Section 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Another case, based on a complaint by mall cinema manager Vijay, has been registered under sections related to alleged assault on security personnel. Police said further action, including possible addition of more serious charges, will depend on the victim's medical condition and the findings of the investigation.
