This guy was determined to prove to his wife that his 3D printer wasn’t a waste of money. When she broke the handle on the crockpot lid, he saw his chance and printed her a replacement. It’s a nice thought, and it’ll probably work fine for a little while. But because most 3D printing plastics don’t handle heat and steam very well, there’s a good chance this handle won’t last long before it starts to soften or break. Remembering the great Bobby Timmons who was born this week in 1935. Known for his funky gospel tinged piano style, flavored with blues and hard bop, Timmons was be able to innovate and improvise on his gospel foundations and brought them into jazz. He had the lyricism of a Bud Powell in his solos, combined with a very dominant left hand which was reminiscent of the stride and boogie players, but it was his sense of that down home chording and timing that really identified him. He was partly responsible for the commercial success of both Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and Cannonball Adderley’s Quintet. For Blakey, Timmons wrote the classic “Moanin'” and, after joining Adderley in 1959, his song “This Here” (followed later by “Dat Dere”) became a big hit; it is little wonder that Adderley was distressed when, in 1960, Timmons decided to return to the Jazz Messengers. “Dat Dere” particularly caught on when Oscar Brown, Jr. wrote and recorded lyrics that colorfully depicted his curious son. Here, he is performing “Moanin” with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on saxophone, Jymie Merritt on bass and Art Blakey on drums live in Belgium, 1958.
