hey why is all of the imagery modern? is there like a total dearth of any evidence for Eostre worship?

Lots of dubious stuff. Where is the evidence the English “reverted back to the pagan name for Easter”? Bede just says the name for the *month* was used for the Christian festival (see below). No “reversion”. What OHG cognate for Eostre does Grimm cite? In what text is this found?

Jesus of Nazareth resurrected from the dead with a real physical glorified body witnessed and interacted by many before He visibly ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father as our High Priest until He comes again at the last day.

It was formerly a tradition among English Christians to watch the dawn at Easter. Francis Young writes, “you might be lucky enough to see the sun dancing in the sky as it rises, rejoicing at the resurrection of Christ – although tradition also records that the devil usually manages to put a hill in front of the dancing sun to stop people seeing it” The association of Easter with the rising sun to me seems to point to the fact that Eostre was the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn as the etymology of the name also shows

Easter pre-dates the Anglo Saxons by over a millennia, they being who invented Eostre

Easter dates back to the Proto Indo European dawn goddess 5000+ ybp

There are issues with this. Where is the evidence the English reverted back to the name of Easter? The situation of conversion of the Anglo Saxons and the Nordic countries is completely different and centuries away from each other.

Another pagan festival that was stolen and co-opted by Christianity in order to make it more appealing to us Germanic barbarians.

Ryszard Derdziński's profile picture

It is also "dawn, morning" = the morning of Jesus Christ's Ressurection. This is why Christian Germanics chose this name for our Christian/Catholic most important holiday. Qaþ imma Iesus: ik im sa Wigs jah Sunja jah Libains. Ainshun ni qimiþ at attin, niba þairh Mik.

Freya and Brigitte could be cognate. The Phrygians were said to have been formerly named Brygians. And they called themselves the free men. You know Dutch vrij means free, and vrijen means to make love. A very interesting read:

Honestly i had no idea. When was the cognate relationship to Eostre realised? Beforr Grimm?

Little factoid you might like (if you aren’t already known to it). The Yezidis (Indo-Iranian people) celebrate their new year around this time of year, I think the first wednesday of april. The call it “red wednesday”. On that day they celebrate new life and.. paint eggs!

Eostre (from which the English name for Easter is derived) was the name of a month and we don't actually have concrete evidence that it was the name of a goddess. By the time the Romans made contact with the Germanic peoples Christians were already celebrating the Resurrection.
