I think the problem is that we did not expect that half the USA was cool with fascism. We knew they were cool with fascism being invoked on minorities, but not that they're just cool with it period. They like it. They want to make everyone obey their worldview. Freedom be damned.

I been feeling this way since Covid. Working where i did at the time i saw so many people die, lose their jobs i felt like that time should be recognized and all of us who survived or not should be looked at with a different level of respect but we just act like it was all fake
