Today is #NationalHandloomDay, a day that takes us back to the Swadeshi Movement of 1905. In 2015, Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi dedicated this day as National Handloom Day. Handloom is a significant symbol of Indian culture. Every state has a rich handloom tradition. Today, I have chosen to wear an Assamese Mekhela Chador, one of the most comfortable traditional attires. Whether silk or cotton, every handloom speaks of the families who weave them for us. I strongly appeal to everyone to support handloom and support those families who weave them for us. - Smt Nirmala Sitharaman explains the significance of #NationalHandloomDay

Hon’ble Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh inaugurated the Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology (CoE-HT) at IIT Delhi, in the august presence of Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Smt. Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) along with senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles and IIT Delhi. The Centre will serve as a national hub for research, innovation and digital technologies to strengthen India’s handloom sector.
